Hello everyone.

I've been a Corvette enthusiast since the day I took a ride in a '63 split window coupe, back in 1963, Brooklyn, NY, on a day a friend and I played hookie. We were hitching to the beach and at a traffic light to the left of us, was a '63 split window coupe. I said to my friend, "let's see if this guy will pick us up", and he said "no way". But it seemed like this guy wanted to give too young 13 yr olds a treat for the day. Since I was the thinnest I crawled into the back, while Pete took the front seat. When he took off, all I could hear was the sound of the dual exhaust while looking up at split window. It was then that I caught Corvette fever. The fever also led me to follow in my dad's footsteps with a trade as an auto body specialist, and I am a muscle and pony car motor head. Living in Long Island at the time, I was priviliged to work with Joel at Motion Performance and was on the team who put together the Motion Corvette, Camaro and Vega.

I'm now retired from the auto body business, and I've worked at having Corvettes or Mustangs in my garage at one time or another. In my younger days, when I got out of Viet Nam, I raced at National Speedway on Long Island, and built a '57 Chevy E-Gaser and was a grand national winner.

I am a purist at heart, although my father and I did a lot of customizing in my shop. All my own cars were always stock, up until today.

Now to get to the point..My wife and I were on the computer the other day admiring the Vipers, which we have always done. We found a 2005 Commemorative Edition Viper nearby with 11,000 miles. Being retired now, I own a Z06, and run a Corvette website and forum, however, although I am very knowledgable about the Corvette from '53-present, I know very little about the Viper and what to look for as far as collectibility, production numbers, characteristics, desirability of certain years etc. Also, I would like to know if the Viper has traction control. Please don't laugh at me!

When we went to look at this 2005 White w/blue stripe Commemorative Edition, we fell in love with it. The seller told us it was #40 out of 100, although he did mention that the reason another potential buyer didn't buy it was due to the fact that when he initially came down to look at it, he thought it was the rarer 2004 Commemorative that went to Barrett Jackson. Are there two Commemorative editions, two years in a row? Also, I would like to understand the difference between the different models. We really do like the Commemorative edition. We aren't really looking for a collectible at our age, but just love the design and the color combo of the white/blue. Any helpful hints would be very appreciated, since I am seriously thinking about buying this Viper. What would you say is a fair price for it? The seller doesn't have any records or window sticker for the car, or any documentation of service. I guess I could get the serial number and have the history investigated. Thanks and my complements to the administrator for a very well thought out forum and website. My wife and I are looking forward to joining the Viper community and making some friends.

Welcome; you've come to the right place for information about the Viper. My understanding is that the white with blue stripe commemorative edition was only offered as a 2005 model.

Can Jon B or Woodhouse weigh in regarding the existence of a 2004 commemorative edition?

in 2004 there was something called the mamba edition. This was an all white viper that had red and black interior, only 200 of those were made. Thats what they are probly talking about. Also the viper does not have traction control :D thats one of the things that makes the viper a viper! well hope this helps:)

Father Larry..... always ask questions when you don't know the answer. I am the proud owner of the #60 Commemorative Edition 05 SRT-10. My previous car (94 RT-10), was totaled last March and a friend in the Viper Club called me to ask if I was looking for another car, I was, and he had this car for sale. I went to look at it, and I didn't even drive it, I just bought it on the spot. It had 2,400 miles and the Sidewinder wheels (from the Copperhead edition Viper), and was just stunning! I have absolutely no regrets, and would do it all over again. I have since installed 3:55 gears, Paxton S/C, Belanger headers and full exhaust, short throw shifter, and have a great performing car that is just a blast to drive. I too love the color combination of this special edition car! I have owned 3 Vettes in the past, and there is absolutely no comparison. These cars ARE rare, and attract attention wherever you go. If you have any more questions, or would like to see a picture or two of the car PM me. Hope to have you as a viper owner in the near future.

Welcome, you will find a ton of info on this forum. And many good vendors and dealers are on this site with a ton of knowledge. Sadly , sometimes going to dealers, you expect them to know all about the Viper, yet they have no clue. I get asked all the time at different dealers Ive been to, what year my car is, If I had painted a special color, etc . Just goes to show most dealers have no clue.

Also, the Commerative Edition was the white with blue stripes convertible. You'll find with the Vipers there are lots of editions with the Gen 3, 2003-2006 models. Mamba's, Copperheads, Commerative, FE's, VOI9 edition, it can get confusing.

Lastly, in my book, that Commerative Edition is probably a $60K car. Maybe a hair higher, you might get it cheaper. Market has been soft.

Like the others, I want to welcome you to the Viper community. Your story is interesting. In my youth, I spent a lot of time wrenching on Corvettes, MGBs, Karman Ghias, Spitfires, and other cars in the 1970's. I still have a 63 Corvette (vert not split window) that I have owned for over 35 years. I have no doubt that you will enjoy driving a Viper and a white one to boot. Good luck in your search and hope to see you here as a club member before too long. By the way, white is the best color but I keep hearing that black is the fastest or maybe yellow or red or ........

Welcome to some of the fastest drivers on the planet and many great friends! You cannot go wrong w/ any Viper you buy. If you plan to do some spirited driving you will spend money on the 04's for engine issues...the other years seem to be more reliable in that area.

And I dont care what anyone says...I think the 03 and 04's are quicker in the 1/4 mile than the 05's and 06's. Most car rags give the 03-04 1/4 mile times in the 11's. The 05's and 06's consistently show 12 plus. I heard a rumor that Dodge changed the tuning on the 05-06 for emissions reasons...slowing the cars down a tad. Anyone else know anything of this?

Welcome. If your new to Vipers you may want to start with a GTS 1996-2002. They are a little rawer but fast, solid and real attention getters. IMO

Welcome fatherlarry!!! The white/blue commemorative edition you are speaking of is gorgeous! I'm glad you spoke to Chuck/Viper Wizard (I saw in another post here he spoke to you)...he would be the one to go to with the questions you have. We always had Vettes and also have one now, an '08 paddle-shifting 436hp exhaust package red one that we love...but NOTHING, I mean NOTHING, compares to the VIPER in RAW BRUTE...and nope, no traction control...there's been LOTS of discussions about that here on some threads! For the Viper to stay true to its roots, we all prefer that it NOT have TC....it's a DRIVERS' car...it DEMANDS your respect and your attention (and everybody else's!!). Good Luck in your search! ~juli

Hi Keith...I don't know personally about changes from '04 to '05...you may be correct.
I DO know we need a 'fine tune' from Kyle, probably this Spring. Hope you're able to get out and about at times! We are not...alas...not yet...drat...:(....juli

Hi guys...I feel like an ass for just now responding!

Ok, first things first...dont go to Kyle. I love the guy but he is new to Gen 3's and u will be experimental at best. Go to Final GTS, Dan Lesser. He is also in NY and has 100x more knowledge than Kyle...and he rivals Tator.

For good reliable dyno numbers, go to Final GTS.;)

Coming from Vettes, as I'm sure many are on here, I can personally attest to the fact that once you get in and drive the car you will be hooked. When I was younger and bought y 1st Vette I was excited to say the least but then this Viper drove by and I nearly got whiplash from jerking my head around. I have a perma-grin going on ever since I bought mine. From the minute it rolled off of the truck, I feel like a kid in a candy store walking around with my allowance money. Dodge has did something that I think is pretty damn clever in that created a Special Edition for every generation and they kept to the color scheme of that edition being White. Anytime you see a White Viper you can bet it is a Special Edition. Now there were other Special Editions as well, such as the Copperheads, the FE's, the special VCA Editions, etc. In my opinion, be careful about sitting and driving that car. Once you do there is no turning back.

Thank you all again for the warm welcome, and for the returned phone calls. Well, the hunt is back on, because I did some research on the one I had looked at and found out the origination of the car. I had them put it on the lift to check it out, and it seemed as if there was some flood damage. The car came out of Florida, and I just wasn't totally happy with the condition of this one. The seller's reply to me was that he would just ship it to Russia, China or India.

I am going to take my time and get the one I want. We like the Commemorative edition and will be looking for that model. Hope to find one before spring. The hunt is exciting, and my wife and I really enjoy it. I enjoy the negotiating most of all. Thanks again, and I'll keep you all posted. You are all great.

I used to live on Long Island, but I'm now retired and moved out of NY, now in PA.

Where are you on the Island..north or south shore? I still have a lot of family living there. I miss the water but not the congestion.

Fatherlarry, Im sure you've already been told this info., but if you have not heard.................The Factory Mopar extended warranty (Max Care) is worth its weight in gold! Ask Chuck Tator or Bill Pemberton about it. Unlike Corvettes, 10,000 miles is a threshold mark in mileage for Vipers. If your looking for a collector, it should be in the <1,500 mile range. The markets real soft right now, and I believe with the Gen IV cars out, you should be able to get a mint car for a bargain (50K+). Happy hunting

I knew after we talked on the phone that you knew what you were doing. Good decision. There are three in the classifeds here. The one with the mods has some of the stuff including the exhaust I told you about. The other two are really low mileage.

If I was going to buy a "used" Viper, I would only buy from a VCA member. I know not everyone is a saint, but I feel you would get a truthful story of the history of a car from a VCA member. You often end up with beat up Auction cars when buying used from a dealer. Unless of course its one of the supporting dealers, like Woodhouse or Tators.

One of the Commemorative Editions listed in the classifieds is mine. Definitely cannot go wrong with this car. Every part of the description is accurate. My reason for selling is to go "Viperless" for a few months in order to free up some cash for other things (home renovations). Then, jump into a new '08 sometime around the August/September time frame.

By the way, the price is negotiable.
