Greetings everyone: I'm new to posting to the forum, but have been reading along for the past few months; I just picked up 1 of the 166 "McViper's" last week with about 34,000 miles and it appears to be in very good condition. I will continue to search the archives for answers to some of my many questions, but bear with me if I ask some basic questions in the beginning. I will post some pics in the next couple of days. I picked up a factory service manual off of E-Bay, so I have some good info readily available, however I'm sure I'll be looking for some real world expertise as well. The first question I have is what is the general consensus on which K&N Air Filter is the best set-up to go with:

1. Keep the stock airbox set-up and just install K&N's in place of the factory filters (about $44 each including shipping on E-Bay).

2. Cone style filters that mount directly to the throttle bodies or air tubes.

3. I saw a complete air-box replacement set-up on E-Bay for $337 which I can't seem to locate at the moment, but I'm not sure where the air breather tube(s) from the driver's side valve cover would go to, or if it would just be vented to the atmosphere.

4. Any other options available from Vendor's advertising on this site.

Thanks in advance for the help, Chris. :D

Welcome Chris! I'm a new owner myself, so no input on the intake choices, but I'd think that cone filters on the TB's (if that's even possible) would cause the intake air temperature to go up since you'd be drawing under-hood air. Just guessing though.

Congrats on the new ride!

Hi Chris,

I'm sort of new here too and I was wondering the same thing. I'd say the aftermarket intake box from PBJ is the way to go. Mine is on order and should be ready later this week. Here's a recent discussion on it:

Thanks to everyone for all the replys; it is interesting having been on different forums over the years and listening to everyone's opinion's and experiences. I think I am going to go with the stock airbox set-up, and put K&N's in there for now, since I can get a good price on them from one of the members on this forum. In my view, I think almost everyone's opinions/suggestions have some validity to them. I'm not sure that I would even notice the difference between 415 HP and 423 HP or whatever, or how I would even measure the power loss due to the extra heat that may be sucked-in with an open airbox filter design without running it on a dyno. Within reason, as long as the user is happy with their set-up, that's really all that matters, and I guess any small gain in power, whether real or perceived, is a plus in my book. If anyone has a line on some used, inexpensive, smooth tubes, I may be interested in a purchase.........

Regards, Chris.

Some guys have gone with something like radiator hosing (can't remember what its called, but its non-Viper taxed), but I cant remember the diameter you need.
