Could you not remove the spark plugs and the valve cover and turn the crankshaft and note the overlap between exhaust and intake valves? Or will the lifters be a problem.

94viper,
To answer your question on if you got a good deal or not, you did! Assuming the car has a clean title(check via Carfax or other type check). You rarely hear of getting into this car at anything less than 35K even for early models. If you do have additional performance mods, plus! Again assuming the work was done right. Enjoy the car, they are a joy, and maybe look into a warranty to help with future work. Drive safe,

Mike

For a cam installed into a Viper, $3K sounds about right. It's mostly labor, plus some extra $$ just because it's a Viper. If he said it's just as fast as a newer Viper and was put in by a Dodge dealer I would guess you might have a Gen II cam in the car. (I think they fit) If not then probably a mild grind like the Gen II cam. The only way to tell for sure is to take it to a dyno. The Gen I cars dyno right around 350-360 rwhp stock and make peek HP at 4,600 RPM. The Gen II cars make right around 400-410 rwhp stock and peak HP at 5,200 RPM. That's the only way to know for sure.

BTW I think you got it for a good price.
