I'm starting the selection process to pick the basecoat system to refinish my hood and fascia - I'll be matching a DuPont ChromaPremium repaint Viper Black with Viper Red stripes.

I will be using an old paint booth that flows from one end to the other - the flow volume is pathetic in my opinion.

I really don't like the idea of exposing myself to these isocyanates and really don't want to spend the big bucks to buy a respirator suit. (I have to laugh, maybe a cheap used SCUBBA rig would be cheaper.)

I don't think there are any non-diisocyanate (DI) basecoat/clearcoat alternatives.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I wonder how bad an old-school acrylic enamel w/catalyst (might the cat be DI?) with a couple of coats of clear might match? I know acrylic lacquer really ***** and is way too brittle.

If you want a finish that is inert to solvents, you have to go the polyurethane route. You can either stay up wind of the spray and switch out masks - or supply fresh air via a pump or tank. If you use isocyanate catalyst - be sure to let the paint mixture set the prescribed time before using. This lessens the reactive molecules in the air when painting.
Acrylic enamal is a good alternative.
