It's clearly sarcasm hinting at the abundance of absurdly powered cars coming to the market.

The Gen 5 has forged pistons, forged rods, crank, and sodium filled exhaust valve stems. (wink, wink)

Sodium filled exhaust valve stems are good practice on turbo charged engines, for removing backpressure heat.

Hmm, forced air, on 640hp... =1000hp?

The Viper will still be quicker by a good bit and faster by a hair. It is great marketing though. Assuming the Viper will come in at a base of 95k...For 95k you get 206 mph and 640hp with a Viper. For 55k you get 203mph and 662hp. When the marketing gurus put it to the general public like that, and the mags will help too in that dept, it will look like a no brainer to the uninitiated. Ford did well with the GT500 you gotta say.

CEJ the Shelby also outdoes the Viper in the torque department. Viper 600 lb ft and the Shelby 630 lb ft. As long as the marketing and mags leave out the huge weight advantage the ZR1 and Viper have on the GT500 it will look like a GT500 massacre on paper .

Why the silly Mustang vs Viper discussion? If you are in the market for a 95-120k Viper, are you really considering a $55k mustang? And the reverse question as well? Just seems like two cars that are totally unrelated to each other on every possible level and I don't think their target customer's are confused. Seems like the only person that discusses this is one that is not in the market for a $100k car anyways.

Push it one level more, at the same price range, is chevrolet worried about losing a bunch of base corvette sales because a mustang has more HP? I don't think so as still two totally different types of cars.

At the end of the day, glad they are doing it with the mustang and super happy what they are doing w/viper. don't really care about the comparisons.

Who really cares about a mustang? I looked at Car & Driver mag today at gym (the one with the ZL1 Cameron on the cover), while thumbing through saw the article on mustangs new 650hp unit...the 0-60 (3.7 sec) and all other times, didn't come up to the Gen V Viper. Think I remember all the moaning not long ago here, that the Viper only has 640hp vs mustang 650.

I honestly hate Car and Driver. It created a pretty long argument at work today between me and a Mustang owner in a discussion about the SRT-10 vs Corvette Z06. Car and Driver apparently has the 2010 Viper listed as 500hp, running the 1/4 in 12.5, with the Z06 running an 11.7.

I will be very surprised if it has only 640HP as the 08 was advertised at 600HP and when we dynod them they were aprox 30 more.

I wouldn't mind getting the Stang for a daily driver...Only, I have a 2006 Mustang GT now.

The quality is very dissapointing. The carpets began to wear out in mere months. The seat bottom trim piece is a huge ghastly piece of plastic trash, that fell off, and hangs down. Looks like the same plastic they make trash cans out of, only it has genuine simulated leather texture, to set it apart from a 30 gallon trash can! Only held on in the front by one single tinnerman clip, that snags a tongue in the cover. They didn't line up the tongue in the slot when it was built, just smushed it in, so of course, it fell out. Such shoddy design, such shoddy assembly. The aluminum trim plates on the steering wheel are thin appliques over plastic, and they actually squeak when you touch them. Everything about the interior reminds you that you bought a low quality, mass produced piece of spit. The brakes were too small, and heat soak if you get a bit ****. The radio buttons are painted, and the white painted markings have worn off from touching them. The lumbar support has quit working. Sometimes the electric seat rack gets hung up, and I have to remove the seat to free it up. Crappiest rack device I've ever seen. Most of these problems happened in the first 15 months. To be fair, the drivetrain has been ok.

So even if a Mustang has 1000 hp, I doubt it would be a very satisfying experience. I'd constantly worry about it falling apart soon, like watching sand sift through an hour glass. I'd keep looking at that crappy interior everyday, generously swathed with black plastic, and worry about what is going to crack off next. Having lots and lots of power can't correct the basic deficiencies the Stang has. It's "Built with Dissapointment".

Comparisons should not be made between two cars when one is a supercharged 8 cylinder and the other is a normally aspirated 10 cylinder. Two completely different beasts. Stupid... stupid... and stupid...

Supercharge the Viper and see where that Mustang stands then. And, I think that is coming... Just wait and see guys and gals.

That mustang is gonna run 11.1@ 127mph

The viper is gonna run 10.5 @ 133

Current gen4 viper has went 11.0 @ 130 mph by a few and one guy hit 10.9

I know many of us arent drag racers but Im telling you that 660 hp figure is very very misleading.

Back in 06 the viper z06 and gt500 were all pitted against eachother. 510, 505 and 500 hp respectively
,
The 3150 pound z06 went 11.8 @ 124

The 3450 pound viper went 12.1 @ 121

The 3900 pound gt500 went 12.7 @ 114

This is nothing new. Just history repeating its self..

Only this time a 3250 pound 640 hp viper vs a 3750 pound 665 hp gt500.

It wont even be remotely close unless the gt500 has 710 hp.

Historically speaking the new vipers power will likely be down played and the viper will actually dyno 600 rwhp.

On the other hand the gt500s power will likey be 600 rwhp.

500 pound disadvantage plus skinny tires and the aereodynamics of a shopping kart will have the gt500 far below the gen5s capabilities

All good info, but I am still not sure why we should care? If someone wants to buy a mustang, then they should but they were never in the market for a Viper. If buying a z06 or zr1, then I can see them also considering the viper, but hoping HP is not their driving factor of their decision.

Wow i see no comparison between the cars. Viper is lighter, better handling and far better looking. The Mustang is boxy, overweight and also comes in a v6 version. I for one do not see any wow to the Mustang and really Ford is throwing good technology and money at a boring box of bolts.
