Fellow viper members,
Excuse me if this seems like more of a vent rather that a question... Lol. Why in the world are people offering me such lowball offers on my car listed for sale?? I have had two separate offers of around $28,000. Needless to say my jaw literally dropped when I saw both of these.
Ok, before we go there on the mileage.... My car is listed accordingly as one o if not the cheapest clean title gen 3 vipers out there. Correct me if I am wrong but were the mechanical issues with high mileage fixed with a revised head gasket on the gen 3's? Also I have always been under the impression that a car sitting stagnent for a while is just as bad or a car than driving it hard all the time.
Why is my car not selling?????

Don't sweat it too much.

The low offers are probably because they either can't offer more, or are hoping you are in a pinch for cash and will take anything you can get.

I mean literally flabbergasted. The KBB on my car with its mileage is $37250. And that in rough condition !!! My car is no way in rough condition either.

Your price is fair, but maybe you need to advertise it beyond this site. Ebay will get more eyes and potential buyers. The miles don't scare me at your $37K price, because it isn't like Vipers fall apart at 50K miles. If anything, they are over-built and tougher than most vehicles on the road. Your car would make a fun daily drivable Viper, for someone that wants to put even more miles on it.

These offers are an attempt to ” meet me half way” which will put you at $33k. If you want $37k, advertise as a firm price

Exactly! It baffles me that people will run and hide from a viper with 50k miles, and then go buy an assembly line built ford pick up truck that will fall apart and rust after 30k miles. People forget that these are hand built and over built like you mentioned. Miles are not a bad thing if it has been kept well.
It just blows my mind that people will take my time with emails, texts, an questions then make an offer that 10,000 less than its value.

Almost at 58k miles on my car and still running strong. I think the market on "daily driver" style Vipers is pretty slim. I think it tends toward "showroom fresh" or "want my money out of my mods" for a lot of them out there. I planned to daily mine and looked accordingly, a little rough around the edges didn't bother me, but it will turn a lot of people away since they think a premium car should be flawless. I agree though, values like that are near insulting. If you're going to try to wheel and deal with me you'd better see the car in person first, don't waste time just throwing numbers out.

Plus keep in mind that it's fall. Potential buyers in most of the US are looking at immediately storing it for several months after purchase.

Both occasions the individual spent an entire day of mine acting like they are seriously interested, and then throw a number out there like 28,000. I couldn't help but get angry.

Because everyone is looking for a deal. Sadly it's like that with everything I sell. You put something up for *** money and people offer you half of what you posted it up for.

It's sad but the one thing is it does have 50k. It does make people a little worried since vipers are more "toy/pleasure vehicles" that don't normally get driven a lot. 90% of the other gen 3s for sale have about 20k miles so that's a 30k mile difference. I think some are just willing to spend 2-3k extra for 20-30k miles less.

Say you listed for 37k with 50k miles.
I see other verts listed 40k with 20k miles. Me personally I'd pay the 3k to save the difference of 20k+ miles.

But then if it's in the lower 30s. Then it's will be more appealing to some to get a discount for the additional mileage.

Example: There's a black 08 vert in classifies with 50/60k and don't get me wrong, the mileage isn't a deal breaker for me, but I personally won't pay near a what a car with 30k miles less will go for. I think his is listed about 56k and I see some 08 verts go in the low 60s. To me, that extra 5-6k is worth not having that additional 30-40k miles.

NINJA EDIT: I did not offer him anything for the vehicle.

They don't care about taking up your time, and it is worth their time. Those people are not offering 10000 less than its value. Value is determined by an agreement between a seller and a buyer. It is not determined by Kelley Blue Book or asking prices posted on the web.

But, I agree, it sure is a PITA to have to deal with those folks that are trying to get a really good deal. When they do, they come on a forum like this and boast about it, and then other folks congratulate them for their keen business sense. It is the #1 religion in America. "Getting the lowest price."

That does ****. You'd think that they would at least do some homework on the car before even asking something like that. Whenever I'm looking at cars I'll try to find multiple examples and compare "market price" along with KBB and NADA. Hell, I had a spreadsheet with 15 Vipers on it when I was looking for mine, so I had a decent idea what "what I was looking for" was going for. I also just respect cars and don't have the balls to lowball someone that much, especially on a car like a Viper. I've kicked myself a little when I hear of some of the deals out there now, but I also realize that I've been enjoying mine for 9 months, so paying a little extra to get it earlier wasn't so bad. There's always a better deal out there if you're willing to wait (for both seller and buyer), the question is how long you're willing/able to wait, and in your case put up with crap, lol.

Yeah, I was pretty bad. Had columns for stuff like the year, color, mileage, price, location, clean carfax, mods, and any other notes. Sort of did the same thing when I bought my Jag that the Viper ended up replacing, but that list was a lot shorter since I only found something like 5 coupes in the entire US in my price range. Made it a little easier to **** them out.

Just some FYI for you. KBB is so far off on what cars ACTUALLY sell for its not even funny. People always try and use KBB and it does not have any reflection of what cars are actually worth. I know car prices and what people ask and actually get for the cars. For the most part on higher end cars KBB is over priced by 10K or more sometimes. If you want to know what your car is really worth hit the local dealer and ask what BLACK BOOK is on your car. Or call your bank or insurance company and ask what replacement value is on your viper. You will be shocked!!! How much less your car is worth than what you think. Your car is worth more than 28K but you will never get KBB for your car. Not in todays market. If you look on Ebay the gen 3's that are listed have been there for a while. If a car sits on the net for more than a month or so generally its over priced. You can ask anything you want but that does not mean you will get it. a

KBB and even Black Book are no good for a small build car like a Viper I had an Indy Pace car and the Kbb was $25 K under the going rates...they have no way to factor in special stuff, they arrive at their numbers by averaging many, many vehicles of the same model, etc....each car is different..

Low balling is nothing new.... IMHO your asking too much. Not that your car isn't worth it, it's a matter of product and demand. There are many models out there just above or below your asking price, newer or perhaps less miles. Everything sells at a price, so you would be much better off lowering your asking price (stand firm if you want) and let buyers know it's not a fire sale.

Regarding book values; lets suppose the book valued your car at $25K. Does that mean it's what you should sell it for- No. On the other hand, if it values your car at $37,250 does that mean it's what the buyer should pay for it- apparently not.

It's the mileage that's hurting your sale, not necessarily the condition.

Good luck with your sale,
Doug

Im not just going off the kbb though. This thread has seemed to focus on that point of mine. I also priced it lower than all the other gen 3 vipers I could find due to the mileage. The next cheapest one on here is listed at 46,000.

I just purchased a gen3 this week. Paid $39K and it has 22K on the odometer. Upon inspection the car was flawless. Paint, interior, and mechanically impeccable.

IMO miles make a definite difference when only talking a grand or two. Also a couple of red flags when looking at your post (for me at least when I look for a car). You only owned it for a few months, had a blast with it, and are still selling it. Question in my head is why sell it so soon if you had such a blast with it? Also 3" with no cats, that would be a problem for me having an emissions test here where I live. I would need to purchase a new exhaust system before I can even register the car. Just giving you some honest thoughts that I have. Not flaming you in any way.

 If it makes you feel any better,

My car is only worth about 5 bucks now. :crazy2:
54,000 miles and lots of track time.

If I were to sell it with a full tank of gas, it would be worth 65 bucks.

None of those comments i put in the for sale ad/threads were meant to be red flags. I am just really fickle when it comes to cars and never keep any of them that long. I owned this car,a LS1 280z, and two other Lotus' in a 1.5 year period. Just because i go through cars alot does not mean anything of their quality, health, or condition.
as far as the Mopar exhaust goes, I consider it an OEM upgrade that was on the comp coupe that had an MSRP of around $1000. Im sure another stock gen 3 owner would be glad to trade with who ever buys this car no problem... ;)

Part of it is someone looking for a steal and the other is the Viper market itself. High mileage vipers these days are over 30,000 miles. It is simply a factor of perception than longevity as the gen3 is nearly bullet proof in stock form. Many owners out there simply admire it on the garage and barely put miles on it. So the market is always saturated with significant low mileage garage queens which I somewhat agree with you about a car sitting for an extended period of time.

For that kind of money, I'd probably just keep it and drive it - the fun value is worth more... or, turn it into a track car. These cars will live well beyond 150,000 miles if driven regularly and not beat on. Lots of people are afraid of high-mileage Vipers because they think they've been driven like Vipers for that entire time - which isn't the case or they would have been wrapped around a tree by then.

Don't worry about it. As has been said, there is always low ballers. Your car is priced right. Just need to find a serious buyer.

For me - mileage on "specialty" cars that I like was not an issue when searching. "Higher" than the norm still received my attention. Its all about the paper.... Records that is. How well it was maintained is a key piece of info. When I bought my 96 SS it had a lot more miles than others I could find in similar shape/ price. The difference was the cars former owner presented me with every receipt and maintenance record from day 1. I had the entire history of the car. Oil changes every 3000 miles, etc. If you have similar info for your Viper, to me that is worth paying extra for. That's my $0.02 worth.... And no that is not a lowball offer :)

28k does seem a little low. But I myself wouldn't spend near the 39k asking price.

I could care less about people low balling me, at least I know people are looking at it. It takes 2 seconds to send a reply saying "too low, my bottom price is XX$" What I can't stand is people low balling me and then also telling me they can get the same car elsewhere for less money. Well if you found that smoking of a deal, what are you wasting my time trying to get my price down? Just go buy the car you found elsewhere. It's like trying to call me stupid right to my face. I don't just pull a number out of the air when lisitng my stuff, I look at the market and see what a fair price is.

LOL, Good to know that I am not alone in that kind of thing.

Only 15? I tracked all Gen III/IV vipers that were on sale on craigslist, ebay, autotrader, and other sources for two months. That beast of a spreadsheet told me everything I needed to know about every one of those cars: how much more to save up to afford, how much payments would be, etc. etc. :)
Its amazing that there actually is a strong trend with Viper mileage and asking price - I thought that it would be much more scattered. I considered keeping the spreadsheet going but decided it was too much time out of my work day :D

I'll give you $100 AND I'll pick it up! Whaddya say? Heck, I'm feeling generous, I'll double your $65 to $130. An offer you cannot refuse!

Those were only the ones I thought were within my range. I was looking right around a $40k top end price, maybe a few thousand over since I might be able to talk some prices down. I was looking at new Challengers before the Viper and after driving a few decided I'd rather have a two seat sports car like I'm used to. The Challenger just seemed like a really big car compared to what I typically drive. And I could get a Viper for the same price, lol.

This time of year all the bottom feeders are out for a deal, you'll have better luck and less frustration in the spring
