Well the 7 racks in 7 days is over and the Vipers finished 1, 3 in Touring (street tire) class. A huge thanks to Paul Mumford (PMUM) for all his help and the hospitality of his trailer. And a big thanks to JoeB for going above and beyond to help. We were really hoping fora 1,2 finish but a highly modified ZR1 driven by a retired NASCAR driver edged out our problem plagued "02 GTS.

Things went bad for the #208 car driven by SSpeed Racer and myself right from the getgo. The plan was to leave for Pahrump early Sat. morning trailering the Viper to my dad's house in Vegas with my Jeep GC, drop the trailer there (in touring you must drive the Viper between tracks) and use the Jeep as a support vehicle loaded down with tires, oil, brake pads, ect. Well we had the hot tire setup of MXX3s, 325/18 front and 335/17 rears mounted on Purner wheels that I use for my 00' Viper's Hoosiers. Well John meets me at my house we load the jeep and put on the wheels as we move the Viper to load it on the trailer the car is grinding bad in the rear. What we found out was the 17" rears are fine for a non-abs car but with an abs car you need to grind a bolt down on each side or you gouge the inside of the wheel (which we did) it took 5 attempts of grinding and putting on the wheel before it was ground enough to go (3 hours late).

Day 1 at Pahrump we're on the track for the first lap and a poorly routed brake line was rubbing against the 17" wheel and broke. Now if you don't complete at least 3 laps at each track you're disqualified. It's Sunday (mothers day), we're in bum f**k Egypt with no brakes. John calls one of his drivers and we offer him $100 to grab a box of old brake lines in John's office and drive it 200 miles from LA to Baker where I met him in my Jeep got the parts and drove the 90 miles back to the track like a madman to arrive 20 minutes before our last session. It was amazing to watch all the fellow racers help us to put it on just in time to get 4 timed laps, we didn't get the DNF but were low in the standings.

Day 2, Willow Springs (big track), the "Fastest Track in the West" was well suited for the Vipers easily taking 1, 2 and even beating most of the Unlimited cars.

Day 3, Streets of Willow, a very small very tight track PMUM got the #1 spot in touring but we lost our abs, flat spotted our tires and did not fair well. PMUM wanted our MXX3s (not the set we flat spotted) so we swapped him our 4 MXX3s for a brand new set of Pilot Sports for the back and he also loaned us a set of 315 Pirelli Rossas for the front, you gotta love this guy.

Day 4, Buttonwillow (clockwise), uneventful place well even without abs
we ordered a set of Purner 285/18 shaved MXX3 tires for future use.

Day 5, Thunderhill not having abs is killing use, JoeB drove 180 miles from Danville to watch us race, we decided to blow off the 2nd session and hit a Dodge dealer 38 miles away to bleed the abs pump and scan the codes. Halfway there we realize we forgot John's "special" brake fluid at the track, we give a call to JoeB who is still there and he delivers it to us at the dealer, what a guy! We find out from the Service Dept. that we have a bad speed sensor on one of our front wheels. Not a hard thing to replace but impossible to get within the next couple of days. JoeB to the rescue, he has a '01 Viper and the speed sensor is the same for the '01 & 02', he offers to go home take it off his car and then get up at 4:30am and drive it the 220 miles to Buttonwillow before our first session, is ths guy great or what!

Day 6 Buttonwillow (counter clockwise) JoeB arrives with the sensor and we install it, he stays the whole day and helps in the Viper pit, by the way did I mention I love this guy. T1 is tight now with the exception of PMUM who is WAY in 1st (in Touring) winning every track but the race for 2,3 & 4 was really close, us, a red ZR1 and a Z06 from Virginia. John went out with the new shaved MXX3s and didn't like them, I went out next session and smoked them, the biggest flat spot anyone ever seen, scratch another set of tires. Last session if we are to place 2nd we must beat the ZR1 at this track, with the Pirellis back on the front and the track going away from the heat of the day John drove like a madman and turned his fastest times of the day only to lose by 17/1,000ths of a second (not the 79/1,000 I mentioned earlier), that was a tough one. Now we must fight the Z06 for third.

Day 7, Las Vegas Speedway (inner track) PMUM on street tires is 5 points ahead of a race prepped Porche on slcks for the overall (touring & unlimited) lead. Unfortunately it is a tight 1.5 mile course that heavily favored the Porsche with its 18" slicks. John & I kicked butt and got 3rd.

So in final sumation, PMUM won touring and came in 2nd overall, he also got the Topgun award as the best overall driver. We got 3rd in Touring. We drove 2,400 miles, got lots of bumps and bruises and just plain old had a blast. Results shoud be up at www.opentrackchallenge.com.

Hey Ron!!!

OTC--Great Time.

Ron and Jon and Paul,
What a blast!! Congratulations to you guys. What a grueling time. I commend all the participants for their stamina for one week of racing every day and then driving some long distances at night. I was exhausted after just two days. The competition is so fierst.
Also, a special thanks to Stop Tech's Matt Weiss who came to Button Willow to help the Viper cause. Paul Mumford's car had a stripped bolt on the brake caliper which he tried to fix in between runs. I got to assist him while he worked Paul's car and he showed me the system and all the little things that make this a great system. Is that customer service or what? Soon I will be installing Stop Tech's on my car.

And last but not least, a special Thanks to SoCalRebel for a Hell of a ride at BTW. The Mark of Zorro.

Again What a Race!!!

I'd like to give a HUGE thanks to John Dearing and SoCal for helping out all week. Also, as SoCal pointed out, Joe went WAYYYY out of his way to help us out. They did an unbelievable job to pull off 3rd place in what was easily the most competitive class in a field of over 130 drivers. Viper Days drivers better watch out for these two in the future. Hopefully Zorro's (John) ABS will get fixed soon so there won't be a massive run on front tires.

Those of you that don't have Stop-Tech brakes are crazy! We put 2400 miles (almost half of that on the track) on a 3400+ pound ACR and only had to change the front pads once! Unfortunately, the Schleys weren't there to do it, so I attempted it on my own. I promptly stripped out the bridge bolt with what I'd like to assume is my Herculean strength. I left a message from Thunderhill at 4:00PM asking them to FedEx a new bolt to Buttonwillow. At 9:00AM Matt Weiss showed up with new bolts, new rotors, tools and spent the rest of the day helping both of us out and getting ready for the next event. I can't say enough about those brakes and the company behind it.

John Purner from Complete Custom Wheel was also amazing. Having never really run street tires and having 12" front rims (no Michelins) I thought we'd run Pirellis. After the second session of the first day, the P Zero Asymetrico rears were throwing chunks of tire at everyone behind me. Purner Fedexed a ton of tires to us to experiment with to find a decent setup and just told us to return what we didn't need for a full refund. I can honestly say that we know the best setup to run for true street tires--bar none. CCS rims are great too. I bent an inner shell whilst bouncing over a huge curb at Streets of Willow. When I hit it, I was amazed that the rim didn't break in half. He sent me just an inner shell and we put it back together in no time. The best wheels by far.

Finally, I'd like to thank Erik Messley at EMI racing for setting up the suspension on the ACR and Dave Jenkins at Neighborhood Service for doing all of the last minute preparations. I can guarantee that there isn't a street Viper that handles even remotely as well as my car. Erik didn't just bolt on a set of expensive shocks and call it a day. We've been through virtually every combination of spring rates/shock settings known to man to find the perfect balance.

Everybody who does track events needs to plan on doing OTC next year. This event is going to be huge in the upcoming years. A few One Lap participants entered OTC and all of them liked OTC much better. This was easily the best event I've ever done, but wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable without the help of the aforementioned people. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the report. That sounds like quite an adventure. I looked for the results on the OTC web site hoping to see some lap times, but the pages were not up. Do you know where I can see the results? I'm especially interested in the T-hill lap times that you guys were able to do on street tires.

All of the participants were complaining about how poor the lap times were in relation to their previous times. Unfortunately, last week every track we were at had blistering heat. It was usually between 90-100 degrees at most of the tracks and the lap times seemed to be about 2-3 seconds a lap slower for everybody compared to their normal time.

I think John did 2:08s last week whereas he went 2:05s at ViperDays a couple months ago and probably drove better last week. I think I was running low 2:02s.

Paul and Ron--

Thanks much for the update, AND thanks for WINNING, BABY!!

You make us posers SOOOO proud!

Ron--your story left me exhausted...I don't know what drives you guys. Great going beating the Z06! Yeee hah!

I noticed that neither of you had ANY engine trouble.

I love vipers!

Paul--do you run without ABS?

Ron--does running without the ABS kill you because of the possibility of flat spots, or because you can brake to better times with ABS?

Congratulations guys! Excellent showing...I've been following the teams progress on the Pulpracing site (curse the OTC for running such a massively cool event and not updating the results daily) and cheering on the Vipers from a distance.

Great job!

See? What did I tell you 2 years ago? "Paul, YOU need reliable brakes first, THEN call Erik and make it stick!"

Congrats!

Let's see if I have this straight - even with ABS working, you still ruined a tire due to flatspotting?

Moral of the story - there's no substitute for knowing how to threshold brake.

toddt, Paul has abs in his '01 ACR.

My car is a '00 so I'm used to no abs, it was different driving and abs car. But when the abs goes out you don't have the pedal feedback of a non abs car.

Dean, the abs was not working right even after we replaced the sensor, I thought it was working right and hit the pedal hard and absolutely destroyed a front tire, other drivers came around to take pics of the tire it was soooo bad. I am very good at threshold braking ON MY CAR, I've never locked them up because of all the pedal feedback, and the Stoptech brakes add to that feel.
