oil change $\'s

i just called the dealer to ask a price to get my oil changed and they told me $175!!
after i recovered from the coma, i asked him to break that down for me. he told me $92 in parts and the rest in labor. here is my breakdown:
10qts mobil 1 syn@$5 per quart= $50
1 filter@ $6= $6
1/2 hour labor=40
total of $96.
do you guys change your own oil?
where do you take it if you don't?
how much?

Re: oil change $\'s

Costco - $3.90/quart
Labor - my two hands.

After the first change cost me $100, I figured that I should get closer acquainted with my car!

Re: oil change $\'s

You are getting ripped! What a focking pile of crap that is. Find yourself a new dealer!

I spend at Walmart about $4.00 qt of mobil syn. The 5 qt jugs are more expensive than the individual qts..go figure! So I just have to open more qts.

Mobil 1 filter is about 10.00

I do the oil change under $60.00 and it takes me 15 minutes to do it. I just get aggrevated to read your post about a dealerlike that! An oil change is an oil change.

Re: oil change $\'s

Buy a low jack from Harbor freight. I think there down to $99.00 http://www.harborfreight.com/.
You should have one any way. Check brakes etc. An hour changing your own oil can be a bonding experience between you and yours. Besides do you really want some one leaving the filter lose because they don't want to damage it?
This kind of stuff isn't for every one and if it's not your thing ask some local club members where to go. Maybe you'll get lucky and some one will volunteer to (show you how) to do it.
By the way if you buy a jack and use it, make sure you are directly under the lifting locations as not to damage the side sills. And use jack stands!

Absolute rip-off. Get that puppy on a lift or jack stands and change it yourself. No one will take better care of your Snake than you will and an oil change is one of the easiest things you can do (and that is coming from a non-mechanic like myself). WARNING ... WARNING ... If you use jack stands to change your oil, be sure the car is level when you drain the oil. About one quart of oil will remain in the pan if you attempt to drain the oil with the front end elevated and the rear wheels on the ground.

I bring my own oil/filter (Mobile One) and World Tire does it for $12. I would imagine that there would be several places willing to do the same. Sure, you can save yourself the $12 by doing it yourself, but why?

Re: oil change $\'s

I agree that an oil change should not cost more than $65.

However, my questions deals with the frequency of greasing our cars. I have mine greased every other oil change. Since this requires all four wheels be removed to access the upper ball joints, I have to use the dealer. I don't have a torque wrench either.

How often do you lubricate your cars?

Re: oil change $\'s

Our dealer charge on oil change is currently $99 for a Viper...using Mobil 1 10W-30 and a Mopar filter (about $5). Admittedly, I do them myself...$18.88 for Mobil 1 in the 5 qt. jugs at WalMart, and $11 for Mobil 1-204 filter at Autozone.

I generally lube our Vipers once a year.

Rich,
I like to change my own oil as I allow the oil to drain for hours. If you will notice, even after a half hour of draining, you will still see drops of oil dripping every few seconds.
Just makes me feel better to get as much of the old oil out of the sump. I do this with all my cars.
I have a low-rise lift that I use.

While on the oil subject----Pep boys had mismarked their mobil one. They were selling a case (6) for the price of a single quart. Not that I would ever ever take advantage, but it sure was bargain for a while. John

John,

Why didn't you mention this to us Atlanta guys :) I'd have loved to, uh, not partake of that one.

Actually, I use Amsoil now, but at that price...

Another DIY'er here, I like getting under the car and checking things out. I'll also let the car sit for about 20 minutes and drain.
To some it is an oil change, to others it's a religious experience.

Rich- let me guess, you called Barbera? They do great work but are ripoff artists, I would only go to them for warranty items.

I bought my oil from Walmart in the 5 quart jugs, then took the car to McGarrety & Moser (right up the street from us on West Chester Pike). They charged me $7 for a filter then $20 for labor. I'll be taking it there from now on.

Definitely way too high.We charge around $90 for a 10 quart change and filter, and that is labor included. $175 must include a lunch with a glass of Cabernet, and probaby a shoe shine. Just guessing, it could be $180 with a shoe shine.

Most Dealers are in the 90-110 range if they are competitive. Most will have only let their Viper Techs work on Snakes , so labor is a bit higher than the average, but with an oil change it makes little difference - you just get a guy who works on them all day.

I too buy my Mobil 1 at Walmart, a Mobil 1 filter at AutoZone....and do it myself.

(ab...the 5 quart jugs of Mobil 1 are around $18. to $19.00...making each quart just under $4.00....individual Mobil 1 quarts at our local Walmart are almost $5.00 each.)

Everyone has their own way of doing things but trust me on this - do it yourself. You'll enjoy doing it if you take your time, you'll get all of the old oil out by draining over night and you'll feel good about doing it (and you'll know it was done right!)

Cheaper and better piece of mind - you can't beat it.

I have a lift in my basement garage. You're welcome to come up here & use my lift to change it for free. Just bring oil & filter. It'll take less then 1/2 hour.

I've kinda wanted to change my own oil but since the car is still under warrenty I was worried that not having the dealer change it would possibly raise questions regarding warranty issues later.

It should not be an issue. I believe there are guys that have after-market headers, cats, and cat back systems that have not had a problem with the "voided warranty syndrome".

I know the drain plug is in (yeah it's happened before), I know the filter is on and/or tight (yep that's happened too), I can let it drain for more than 10-15 minutes, I can make sure the right amount of oil is put in (yessir daddy, that's happened too). For me I'll continue doing it myself (of course the Quiklift doesn't hurt! :))
