Oil Intake Manifold

Hey I'm changing my intake manifold gaskets this am. The manifold is off and everyone of the runners has a oil comimg out of them. About a teaspoonful per runner. Not much.

Is this normal? The car sees quite a bit of city driving. Intake manifold vacuum before teardown was 11 psi. Car ran fine except for a frequent rise in idle RPM to 1200-1500 followed by rise in engine temp. Suspected a broke intake manifole gasket and #9 is in fact broken all the way through top and bottom.

Should I proceed to put it back together?

Or is a bigger repair (i.e. valve seals) needed.

It's a '97 GTS with 17,000 miles.

I would suggest that your intake gasket leak caused that particular cylinder to misfire, which could cause excessive accumulation of oil. Engines thrive on good clean (and dry) combustion, which helps to keep rings seated. I would replace the thermostat (must do) with the available 180 degree unit and reassemble being very careful to properly torque all engine parts. Good luck. Bobby

Each of the runners have about the same amount of oil.

It doesn't burn oil and passed smog.

I don't have the 180 degree thermostat available at this time.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I'll put it together and then order that thermostat.
This has been a fairly easy job thus far.

Oil in the intake manifold? Hum! I would be concerned about more than just intake gaskets. I can think of no reason why that would be the case. I take a look a an engine schematic and report back. Oil in the intake, oil in the intake ...... ?????

1) MISTAKE ! Then you have to again pull the I/M and ruin the new gaskets to reset the T-stat! Same-time install a great idea. (In-stock at PartsRack $85)

2)Oil in the intake is probably from the inferior baffling of the valve covers. They puke oil under braking mostly into the left throttle body.....the inferior PCV harness of the 1996-7 makes it worse. Overfill of even 1/4 qt makes it REAL bad, and 1/2 qt a problem.

I back tracked and found that the oil was mostly from the PCV system.

I allready installed the upgraded PCV harness.

Oil level dead in the middle of the dipstick hi lo marks.

Actually I found that changing the intake manifold gaskets was a nice easy and happy job.
Torquing all those bolts was the most aggrevating portion.

I also used Hylomar HPF by Permatex to help seal the manifold side of the gaskets. Anyone else have experience with this?
It seems like really great stuff. Very viscous and appears that it should seal minor imperfections quite well.

Used Permatex High Tack sealant on the Head side though now I wished I had used the Hylomar there as well. Maybe I'll be able to do that when I get that new thermostat.

The Hylomar appears to be so viscous that I actually considered not using the paper gaskets at all. Just using the hylomar between the metal surfaces.
Any thoughts on that idea?
