While the oil pressure gauge is wonderful thing, what is the normal Oil Pressure range at IDLE? What is the normal Oil pressure at , lets say, 2500 RPM?

I see to hit about 20 psi at idle and a little above 40 when I drive. (Yes, my oil needs changed bad) Just curious, is this normal range?

So Doug, do you have a good recommendation for a mechanical gauge? Preferably one that maintains interior aesthetics, yet is functional as you describe? Thanks

Hey Doug,
help me out here, I was told(high school shop class

) that as a general rule, we should hav 10PSI for every 1000 RPM. Is this about right or is it different for this particular engine? Now it has been, ......cough, 20 years since shop class.

Hello Mike -

Way too many factors effect oil pressure readings:
In part, engine temperatures, manufacturer tolerances, 10w 30 vs. 5w 50, oil type, engine wear etc...

Question is: Which would you prefer? Higher oil pressure with a thicker weight oil -or- lower oil pressure with a thinner weight oil that moves oil across reciprocating parts more efficiently?

Have a great weekend!
