Can anyone please give me an idea as to what the oil pressure should be at when the car has warmed up and is just at idle? Mine looks fine when it first starts but seems to drop down quite considerably after it has warmed up.

Also I notice a bit of ticking from the engine comparment on the car after it has warmed up and is sitting at idle. Is this normal as well?

Thanks
Aaron

Aaron,

I've got a GenII and at hot idle it has 45 psi. It depends a lot on what oil you have in it. I'm running the Mobil1 0W-40.

That's normal. Most of us switch to Mobil 1 15w50, and the valvetrain noise goes away, and the oil pressure won't drop as much when hot.

Thank you. This is the first summer with this car and it has certainly been different than the other upper end cars Ive had. It has been great, just a few little things and sounds I didn't hear in my other cars.

It currently has Mobil1 0W-40 in it. I will get the shop to change that, even though they say that is what they are told by Dodge to put in them, and see if that helps as well.

If I'm not mistaken, 15w50 is the factory fill on the ACR,..........or maybe just the ACR-X. Never the less, Everyone pretty much runs 15w50 except the colder climate guys.

Hi Aaron. Welcome to the VCA!
What are your actual readings? Cold idle, hot idle, hot @ 1800 rpm.
Lots of good information about oil pressure in the archives. ViperX posted readings from his Vipers:

My 01 is about 45 psi at hot idle. Running 10 w 30 with 38,000 miles.

My 04, when stock, was as Daniel states above, close to 50 at hot idle. 10 w 30 w 32,000 miles.

My 06 can get down to 25 - 30 at hot idle - like after coming off of the track with 0 w 40 with 20,000 miles

My 08 can get down to 40 ish at hot idle. 15 w 50 at 8,000 miles.

Use Mopar filter # 05037836AB. A white colored filter with viper written on it. Supposed to fit '92-'06. Supposed to have better filtration, better flow and more pressure.

+1 on what fastfang said. When I started using that filter I saw a 5-10# increase in my oil pressure reading.

+2 here even with 15w50 oil the pressure is noticeably higher with these filters. :2tu:

03-04 cars see 50-60 at hot idle on 10W30 or 0W40. 05-06 cars will see 25-35 on those same oils. The main bearings are different between those years.

What you described is exactly the way all 06's come from the factory. Mine did the same since day 1. I would not worry about it.

Somebody mentioned it above, be sure to get the "white" oil filter, not the black one. For Gen III, I think it has "Viper" on it while I think the Gen IV has SRT on it. They are different filters and part numbers, so be sure you get the correct "white" filter.

Your local dealer or Viper Parts American can supply either of these to you.
