I was out for a ride in the SRT yesterday and some guy was trying to get my attention while driving down Woodward ave. in his silver GT2 and we ended up on the freeway for a quik blast. He started out ahead of me and stayed in front due to traffic and a spot opened up and the both of us took off at warp speed. the distance between the cars stayed about the same, till I let off at least. Topped the car out in 4th dont know how fast didnt want to look down to find out, thought that was fast enuf. The GT2 is one beautiful machine, sounds great, dont know if its worth 100K more than the SRT! But man that is one hot car.

I just looked at the last Road and Track w/ SRT and CC on cover. The table of specs says the SRT tops out at 157 in 4th, that was too much fun and too fast.

So this means the gears in the SRT are longer than the Gen IIs (not sure about Gen Is). Gen IIs top out at ~140 mph.

Actually, the only reason the 4th gear redline MPH is greater than the Gen-2(Gen-1 is identical gearingwise) is due to the overall diameter of the tire. The 6200 RPM speed with 335/35/17 tires, 3.07 rear end gear and 1.0 4th gear ratio is 156MPH @ 6200 RPM. It is 163MPH with the SRT 345/xx/19 tires with the 27.4" overall diameter. Since the SRT has the same 3.07 rear end gear and 1.0 4th gear the larger tire diameter is the only thing making for the higher MPH @ any given RPM.

Gearing in Gen III's is the same. Slight difference in rolling diameter. I would think the max speed in each gear would be very close. If memory serves me correctly (been since last November since I drove the RT/10) the upshift speed is around 145 mph. That is about 5800 rpm. No reason to go beyond that speed in 4th as 5th starts to provide greater acceleration. Haven't tried the SRT at that level yet. 600 miles to date and I am not yet ready to do extended WOT runs, especially to redline.

Edit - Just read Paolo's note (written while I was responding). I don't think the 27.4 inch diameter is the rolling diameter. Anyone know the rolling diameter of the 345 tires?

I had a similar experience with a guy in a 911T X50 package 450hp vs standard 415 and he had obviously done some mods. It sounded mean... We had a little cat and mouse on the Kennedy expressway where traffic permitted. (I am not one of those guys who weaves in and out of 3 lanes at Mach 2.. I only blast the gas when there is a big opening and lots of runway...) That being said, His car was pretty freakin fast. We were neck and neck up through third (I was slightly gaining), when we had to hit the binders for traffic... Later, we were stuck traffic and he yelled SWEET RIDE.... I have diven 911T's before and I can tell you that there is no sensation of speed what so ever. It is almost TOO smooth.. Thats whats missing in most sports cars... CHARACTER... The SRT has loads of it...

In a 911T You may not be able to stack a pyramid of champaign glasses on the hood, or cruise "effortlessly" at any speed.

The Viper... Yea it shakes, it rattles, it takes BOTH Hands on the wheel at ALL times to tame this beast.

But isn't that what a true sports car is about.... If you want comfy... Get a Porsche..... (or a 550M Maranello....)

If you want pure addrenaline.... Get a viper....

[/QUOTE]

the gen-2 335/30/18 rears have an overall diameter of 25.9"
the gen-3 345/30/19 rears have an overall diameter of 27.4"==> the 19 is 1.5" taller the rpm @ any given speed in any gear will be lower with the taller tire. I do not know what you mean by the rolling diameter: It's all relative.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I got the "140 mph in 4th" for the Gen II from the two dyno days at Heffner's Performance. He had the tachometer/speedometer display on his computer while running the pulls. I couldn't remember the exact speed, but I knew it was over 140.

hey sylvan,
I think the car you raced was probably a fake GT2. Not saying it didn't have GT2 power, but that Euro dealer on Woodward was selling a silver "GT2" a few months back on Ebay that was really a Turbo with the wing, wheels, front fascia, and badging from a GT2 put on. Pretty ricer for a 120k car. They did say it was making quite a bit of power with a reprogram and bigger turbos...

We have some pretty ricer high end autos around here. Whenever I visit my parents in Plymouth I see this chump tooling around in an SL500 with a custom plate that says "SL 55". Unless there is some secret I don't know...I thought AMG cars had the correct numbers on em...

That's cool...I just figured odds were there wouldn't be two silver GT2's in the same area in Detroit. Not a whole lot of Porsche fanatics here.

We should highway run when I get the ride back.. ;)
