2003 convertible.... What size are the front door speakers??

I've used the search function and read threads about speaker upgrades but they all talk about 6-1/2" front doors. I pulled one out and it measures 5.5" across between screw holes. I see listings for 5-1/4", 6" and 6-1/2" so I'm unsure what size to buy.

Thank you for your patience.

I can't find a listing for a 6". There are 5-1/4 and 6-1/2" but no one lists a 6". What size 'diamonds' did you use? Don't you measure a speaker by the flange size/ holes?

Thanks. Anyone else? Are the Gen11's 6'1/2"? There are alot of posts about them.

I ran 5.25 Focal's and made a plate.

How much smaller were the 5.25's? I'm just trying to get an accurate answer as to what the stock size is. I can make a plate or trim out the opening but I'd really like to put the same size in without the hassle. Am I measuring the stock ones correctly at 5-1/4"?

Plates are super easy, but as mentioned above, a six works fine too. I think I had sixes in my Mamba. There are 5.25 coax's out there, just not good ones. CDT used to have a Eurosport that had the tweet that mounted with a clip just in front of the cone. Those would work well, just check your depth. I have some Dyn's laying here, but I think they are 7's.

So the 5.25's aren't any good? I was going to get them since they would fit without any hassle. If you use 6.5's (not may 6" out there) I take it you install them behind the door panel? How do you reattach the stock grilles? I don't want to surface mount the 6.5" grilles (they will stick out)since my knee already rubs the stock grilles.

In a gen3 there is plenty of depth. Is yours a gen 3 or 2?

Thanks for all the help.

On the sixes, I ran Focal's grilles...the red F and the Mamba interior matched.:rolaugh: The 5.25 sounded just as good to me as the sixes did.

Thank you City Snake. I knew I had read this thread a year ago but couldn't find it with the search feature.

Has your opinion changed after a year or two of use?

The replacement speakers are better. No question. Certainly worth the sub $100 effort. However, you should note that the weak link in the system is the console speaker, the replacement of which is severely limited by the size and shape of the enclosure. The good news is that the door speaker replacements will enhance the sound output in terms of quality and sound pressure. The bad news is that as you turn up the volume you'll soon notice the severe limitations of the console speaker.

Thanks City. I bought a Kicker 6" shallow mount for the center and it sounded terrible with factory power. I may get a small amp for it but really don't want to go through the hassle. I have the doors and tweets run through my Pioneer head unit which made the stock speakers sound so much better. Now its time for a speaker upgrade.

Thanks again.

Bought the 6" Kickers and what a disappointment. After I bought them I compared them to the Polks at BestBuy and the Polks are much clearer and have more bass. Last time I take someone else's reccomendation without listening myself.

Anyone want a new set of Kicker KS600's for $75 shipped please let me know. They have about 20 minutes of use.

Do yourself a favor and go buy just a middle of the road set of Focals, polyglass even. Just the tweeter should be an enormous improvement over either of the above. Polk is complete trash, no offense, and you shouldn't be looking for bass out of your mids either.

I'm sure you're right. I've always bought high end speakers and never had complaints. Because it's a convertible I didn't see the point in the expense but I'm rethinking. Where is a good place to buy the Focals. I really just want a mid bass driver. The tweeters in the dash are all the highs I need.
Thanks Tucker.

Wow they are expensive. Do you know if 'Auditor Rip 165C 6.5-inch Coaxial Speaker Kit' speakers are made by Focal. They pop up when I do a search for Focal.

I wouldn't touch a coax, but Focal makes one themselves that I have used for rear fill in trucks, and they don't pop, which most coax's do. Having a focal tweet pointed at the windshield are pretty hard to beat. I had a little JL 8W3 in a footwell mounted box with 6.5 Focal Utopias in my white Mamba, and it sounded great. I even have Focals in my damn Scrambler.:rolaugh: Damn good speakers...spend the two hundred bucks for a set of Access at least. PM on the way.

If I use components can I use the factory crossovers and just install the speakers? Running wire thru the door into the dash looks like a pain in the ass.

Bearing in mind I'm no expert, I don't think it's terribly necessary to use a crossover on the mid driver (door speaker) as I don't think there is a lot of power to worry about from the factory amplifier.
I did however reuse the factory (cheapo)crossover that was inline with the factory tweeter in the dash. I installed JL mid tweet combo, but left the JL crossovers in the box.
While I believe there is probably a quality gain from the JL crossover, I didn't feel it was worth the extra wiring, especially when leaving everything else stock.
To date no blown components.:dunno:
