Could someone please explain the wires on the 8 pin connector? There are an orange wire and a yellow wire that was not in a gray jacket. There are a green, a blue, and a bare wire in one grey jacket. The other grey jacket has a white, a red, and a bare wire. Also, what are the green and white wires for on the connector that contains the power, etc?

Don't know your year. Here's 99 GTS from chassis manual,

Orange - lights (dimmer switch)
Red/white - Run/Key
Pink - Battery
Black/yellow - Headlamp switch
Black - Ground

Violet - amp power/Battery
Amplified Left speaker
LG/VT - low left rear speaker +
WT/DG - low left rear speaker -

LG/VT - left door speaker +
LG/DG - left door speaker -

LB/VT - right door speaker +
LB/DG - right door speaker -

TN/DG - low right rear speaker -
TN/VT - low right rear speaker +

Door tweeters are wired into door speakers.

You should be able figure your plugs out with this information.

It's for a 97 GTS. Maybe I'm going about this process the wrong way. The color scheme that most people are posting for a wire diagram are not the colors that I see at the actual radio. Do I have to run new wires from the aftermarket radio to the oem amp?

You'll need to get a DIN adapter from the new radio to the OEM amp. This has been discussed many times before.

You would be better off by getting an aftermarket amp as well. It would be a lot simpler to wire.

I guess my question is, From the 8 pin DIN, what wires go to the inner and outer of the RCA cable?

I just purchased a Bluetooth Stereo for my 01 GTS. The wires are probably the same since the stereo is and I'll be installing it next week or the week after.

When I installed the DVD player in my 98 GTS last year I didn't have much trouble figuring out the wires in the amp cable. I just cut off the stereo connector, peeled the wires and soldered them to the new stereo. I didn't keep a diagram, but I'll be figuring out the color codes and will send them to you if you send me a PM that you'd want the list.

I just don't understand why anyone would go to such trouble keeping the stock amp. Just yank the whole system put it in your attic and in 20 years put it back on for your concourse shows. In the meantime go aftermarket amp and head unit and save yourself a half hour of soldering then put up with poor audio quality.

My experience with the stock Viper is that the lousy sound quality is all the speakers. The Alpine head unit and amp are fine. Changing the amp requires the complete rewire of the stereo system, while changing the head unit only requires rewiring of the connector plugs.

After changing speakers I like the sound quality of my Viper(s). If I bought another amp I'd have to purchase a good amp to maintain the high quality that the stereo now has. I'm changing the head unit because the alpine doesn't have Bluetooth, and the idea of wearing an earclip all the time doesn't appeal to me. My new head unit also has an ipod cable and controls work from the remote. Although I don't have a use for that (I use my Sirius Radio), my daughter thinks it's great. As far as the phone ... After setup it's all automatic and hands free, meaning I won't get tickets for using the phone while driving. I also have trouble understanding the conversation with a handheld, while the stereo sounds like the person is sitting beside me.

Chopped the DIN plug off the cable and used my ohmmeter to ID the wires.

Yellow - Ground
Orange - Remote pwr
Loose (braided) wire sheath - ground to stereo case

Red - FR
White - FL
bare wire in grey sheath - FSignal ground

Blue - RL
Green - RR
bare wire in grey sheath - RSignal ground

On the other connector;

The Dark Green/R is the antenna power
The White/tan is the input from the speedo
