You can ask CHuck about this one, he was sitting with me.. Or I was sitting with him... whichever
smile.gif

This guy overhears us talking about our cars and that we each had vipers...... He asks if we wanted to race. We said "Yes" . We asked him what he as and he said he has a Porsche 996. He asked which Viper we would bring and we pointed to mine. He said he had a little work done to it, etc.

He points to his pocket and fingers a *** in his pocket and says he'd race any viper for 5,000 cash.....
grazy.gif

Is there ANYONE in the Tampa Bay area that has some streets I can borrow for a race?????????????????

How fast can these 996's be made to run? Can a little work or a tuner package keep up with a 750 to 800 rwhp viper? I understand they have 4 wheel drive and they launch like a s.o.b.

I've got his number and am thinking about calling to race, but ... I'd like a little potential information on my opponent.

Just to let y'all in on what was discussed at the time of this offer. ******. How many guys claim to want to race and then put a high priced bet on it hoping to bluff their opponent. ******. The guy didn't know where the nearest 1/4 track was. ******. It would've been stupid to run that night because of all the rain. ******. Numbers were exchanged. ******. It should be done at a track. ******.

It was a very interesting evening.

I have seen a few of those light weight suckers with big turbos push 600+HP.
Light weight with that kind of HP is a killer.

There are too many variations to a 996 to really tell what you are dealing with. I have seen 996's from stock to converted GT3 race cars.

Maybe find out where this guy gets his ride tuned and do some snooping around.

Gerald,

Was it silver?

If so, I believe I have heard of the car, and I *believe* it is pretty fast... like it runs in the 10's.

However, it could be a totally different guy. I think you have enough game to pretty much take ANY 996. The only problem would be he can probably launch real hard. If the car sounds close to stock, and doesn't have extra guages, or a massive muffler coming out, I would not be all that worried.

The other guys are right... alot of folks flash alot of money around to psych the other guy out. Tell him you'll race for pinks and see what he says

I think the Viper would lose on a race track. Even with the Viper having more power the Porsche has it easily beat with the handeling. One of my Viper renters lost to a twin turbo pushing 26 pounds by 10+ car lengths and my Viper does 12 flat all day long.....

Good luck......

Handling??? Sorry, we need to get you to a Viper Days, and you will see Snakes annihilate Porsches in handling. Put a StopTech big brake system on it, or get Mumford's Snake, and trust me a Porsche will not hold up to a GTS in a sweeper, AWD is not a major benefit there. Dragstrip , an AWD launch is huge, but track wise Snakes more than hold their own.

Not true, I go by the 911TT's like they were standing still. Even GT2 could not pull on me. There was one 911 that had his boost up and was pullin on me on strait but in the corners I had him weven with his Hoosiers and my stock tires. After the run he asked me what suspensin work have I done since I was pullin on him in corners. I said STOCK

He was shocked.

again, just because you were pulling on a gt2 in the corners means nothing. how do you know what the driver is capable of? maybe he was good maybe he was bad? in real world race events, not viper days, porsches win lots of races.not saying the viper is not capable of winning, but on any given day it comes down to many different conditions.

if it is the guy i know from tampa, he is heavily into road racing, races both his bmw m3 and porsches.

Allan, it was not at Viper days and the guy that drove the GT2 was a professionall driver. My Viper was driven by an instructor. The second Porsche that pulled on me in strait was driven by a guy that races once per month and I was driving my car. Why you never belive to what I'm saying? We have this on VHS.

Gerald,

Ask your self "did this guy hear anything about what my viper has done to it?". If he did then you probably want to stay away from the race. If he has no idea then do it, and try to do it at the race track.

His All wheel drive will give him way too much of an advantage on the street, even if you are on slicks. If you decide street, then get some VHT and make sure to get a nice smokey burnout and lay a lot of rubber down.
BURNOUT.gif
Do it again, and run out about 100 feet of rubber on the street to get a better surface with some rubber on it.
BURNOUT.gif

Then back up over your own tracks, and don't over power the road. You will pull on the 996 up top but you must make sure you don't go spinning out of control in 1st and 2nd gear, other wise the race will be lost.

Good luck, let us know.

PS. I have never ever street raced, this is stuff I learned from the Fast and the Furious.

I have a feeling its all or nothing here..... either he has no clue what he's doing..... or he is playing you....

I've seen twin-turbo porsches run at moroso that look stock...... and right before your eyes they crank out 155+MPH trap speeds..... if he's got one of the badass ones, then he doesn't care what you have, because he knows he an take out just about anyone.....

Chuck, I don't know if you went to the first 1320 at BMP, but there were 2 Porsches, a black and silver, both race prepped running consistent low 10's (maybe high 9's but I don't remember any 9.xx passes off the top of my head) and SPANKING bikes left and right. Gerald, check around and make sure it's not an owner of these cars or you might be in for a big surprise.

P.S. I will hold the money if you race anywhere around Tampa

Did you see his car? This sounds like some guy just giving you a bunch of BS. Did you check out the phone number? Give him a call and ask him about the rules of engagement. I'll bet he comes up with some impossible requirements.
I'm not into todays street racing scene. Do people really street race these kinds of cars for this kind of money? Seriously, no legends or "knew a guy" tales. Have any of you street raced for this kind of money?

Allan,

Before you bad mouth Viper Days, and start stating in real races Porsches do....................

See if Porsche has a better record for consecutive FIA GTS races?
The record holder is the Viper GTSR!!

Check out the winners in the "REAL WORLD ," races and you will see 7th at Daytona in 2000 ---driver Eric Messely ( Viper Days participant ).

Check out the winner of the World Challenge Series 1999 winner, and 2000 runner up --- Bobby Archer ( Viper Days driver ).

The Viper Racing League may be in it's infancy, but the drivers are laying down times that are close or better than GT1 times at many tracks.

Trans Am did not garner alot of spectators in it's infancy either, but no one failed to see it as great racing venue.

When at VOI-7 go watch the race, and take off earlier in Sept ( or late August ) to Buttonwillow, and you will see great , close racing.

In fact best of all, call Freddy Baker in Ohio ( Porsche Dealer ) and ask him what kind of car he will be driving at this years SCCA National Championships --- hmmm, gonna be in a Viper GTS.

Porsche may be a great racing name, and it is a great car no one denies, but........there are reasons Vipers are required to run restrictor plates in SCCA.

No one is arguing AWD in a drag race, but Snakes slither through slaloms and sweepers, and though a Twin Turbo has killer brakes, it won't out handle a Viper.

Nuff said, just a little touchy when you talk about Viper Days and you aren't aware of the speeds these guys/gals are turning.

Call Tom Glenn ( Arrive and Drive ) as he is right there in Scottsdale and pay him to drive a GTS at a Viper Days event. The event and experience will be more than enough to change your mind.

Cory, I've been down there when the Porsches were there. This guy says he has a 996 and the ones that go to BMP are 930s. But **** they all look like Volkswagons to me.

Gerald, Few items to think about: He only knows you have a Viper, not a DLM supercar. Call him up and tell him you have heard of his car and you here its super quick but you think your Viper runs pretty good......bull **** him into giving you 4 -5 car lengths on the start, I would also reduce the amount down to a thousand or two. Anything can happen. I think the strip with et streets on or from a fast roll.....50-60???? would be you best shot. I bet if he was familiar with you car he wouldn't be so perky. Also remember he may be reading or be advised of everything we are saying here. And you will need some drag(track) experience before you race him at the strip.
edit: set this up and see how many on the board will gaurantee some of the $$$. I'll back you $100....any more takers?

if its my buddy im advising him! just kidding. if its the guys im thinking of, they are both very well schooled and are very good at racing for money. both of them are potentialy faster from a roll then a dead start, as they keep the boost lower for drag racing. too many broken axels. they both know who doug levin is, and neither one would back down, especially from a roll.

Gerald, why dont you just run him for a mile from a dead stop? All you have to do is to stay in it, you will probably be going close to 200 MPH by the end of the standing mile... Even if he out-launches you, he will have to have the balls to stay in it for the duration of the mile. See what he says to that offer. All you have to do is practice the standing mile a few times later at night with no traffic and some spotters and you will have it made! Paolo
