I am in preliminary talks with Skip Barber to arrange a 1 day performance driving school. This would be similar what is being done through the N. California region VCA.

The dates being discussed are:
October 22, 23, 24, or 25th.

The course would be conducted using their cars, however, they would increase the standard instruction time in their Vipers. They would allow use of our Vipers in their autocross session.

We will need a minimum on 15 drivers. The cost would be in the $600 range. I may be dreaming, but I will explore having some of our sponsors help subsidize some of the cost.

Note: This possible event is NOT YET scheduled! I am aware that it was attempted in the past and succumbed to a lack of interest. I just need some indication if there is likely to be enough interest from the NY/CT and NE regions (or any other region) to generate the needed 15 drivers.

Say WIZ:

If you continue to call me Cinty I will consider changing the color to pink.

Blue is to generate interest...obviously a complete miscalculation! Looks like we have 4 participants so far. Maybe you were right, not too much interest around here. Still hoping that we can get 15 and make it happen. Don (NE) has responded and will help get out the word. Still waiting for Joe to get with the program. (How about you?)

I would be interested. I am also planning on doing the Barber 3 day Racing School the end of October, at Lime Rock.

The Skip Program for the VCA is a great one day program. Lost of car control and Viper time.

Consider the Sept. 4 date at Laguna Seca. Located near Monterey, Ca. makes for a very nice location.

After the school drive a couple hours south to Button Willow for 4 days of open track activity.

Good idea but you can go to school at Watkins Glen in Oct for two days and cost $450. The second day you'll get to drive your car alone. It is a lot more fun that AutoX.

There are many paths to Performance Driving. Seat time is very powerful.

But from my experience the Skip Barber VCA programs can not be beat. Professional instructors/drivers instructing and critiquing car control, braking and yes autocrossing.

I learned absolutely nothing from the Skip Barber 2 day driving school. Waste of my money even with the 10% VCA discount. I'm sorry I did learn one thing and that was never to buy one of there school cars even for 1/2 price. I was quite surprised how many students in the class could not chew gum and think at the same time.

I have completed 12 Skip Barber programs (some were 1, 2 and 3 days). I have never had a poor program. They have all been very good to great. The N.CA. VCA program is Great!

I realize everyone has their opinions about drivers schools and I realize that their are different and less expensive schools out there. However, THIS thread is an attempt to gain an understanding of the level of VCA member interest in ONE PARTICULAR pending Skip Barber 1 Day event during the week of October 22-25th.

So far it looks like we have interest from 6 drivers. Anyone else?

Say Andrew:
(Missed you on Sunday at the Coliseum!)
That's a good question. I'll make sure to get everyone a complete event itinerary to make sure that it's what they want as soon as I know that we have close to enough drivers. My guess is that some of the cost must have to do with the cost of operating and insuring THEIR cars for us to drive. We will try for the Friday (10/25) of that week. Easiest day for most of us to take off.

Thanks Andrew and Mash. We're now up to 8 interested. (Halfway there!

Laura:
Here's the advertised info:
This program teaches vehicle dynamics, slides and recoveries on a skid pad, threshold braking and accident avoidance techniques. The skill and knowledge learned here are combined in an exhilarating autocross exercise utilizing the Dodge Viper. Much has to be negotiated to cater the day to what Viper owners might want. There's typically some time in the Dodge SUV which I'm told we can exchange for more time in their Vipers. As soon as I know more I'll post!

The CA. School has a program for our Region. It is not a std Skip Barber program. Our program has much more seat time in the Viper than the std 2 day program or the Car Control Clinic.

I suggest you follow the program used at Laguna Seca for the N.Calif VCA. It is really a great one day school.

Is this event going to exclusively for VCA members? Because on the Barber schedule there are already One Day Racing School events for October 24, another for October 31 and a tentative date for October 28th, all at Lime Rock. Also scheduled are One Day Driving Schools for October 21 and October 31 also at Lime Rock.
Are you trying to plan something just for the VCA? What type of one day event is it going to be? I know you said Performance Driving School, but what exactly does that mean?
Thanks

Thanks for the information. Based on what you said, that sounds like their One Day Driving School as compared to their
One Day Racing School in which you utilize their Formula Dodge racecars, and it includes 90 minutes of seat time.
Keep us posted, and thanks for doing this for the benefit of all of us

That's correct Laura. The "race" series is a formula series while the "driving" series is a street car school. I've done their race series (not the driving school) which is EXCELLENT! You'll love it. If you've never driven a formula ford/dodge/V, the experience of driving 24 inches off the ground sitting in the middle of the car is quite exhilarating (and different). Watch those left side wheels - they're not beneath you anymore
smile.gif
. Anyway, the driving school is, obviously, a completely different experience. And thanks for the thanks, but frankly, most of my effort is really selfish - I really want to go!
