Now that I have my new SmarTire pressure and temperature monitor (Thanks Jon B), I'm curious as to what temperature I should program as the max temp warning. Factory setting is 176.

Anyone have any opinions as to what internal tire temperature is too high??? At what temp is the tire damaged?

Thanks

Ron,

The original XGT-Zs area very happy on the racetrack at temps of 170-180F, but they are scarce as hen's teeth these days. The MXX-3s *work better* at lower temperatures (140F), but can handle about the same high temps. g-Force T/As and Hoosiers don't begin to stick well until they hit around 180F and will hang to about 210F. I have no experience whatever with the Pilot Sports. Generally speaking, high quality performance tires will work up to 200F.

The varying compounding of race slicks make each one a completely different animal. If you want to know about them, ask John Purner.

On the street or highway, it would be abnormal to see temps over 140-150F in the heat of summer.

Hi, Ron. You might want to read the Dec. '01 Road&Track, page 111...interesting article on tire temp/pressure sensor systems (the new 'Vette sounds neat)... Author notes CONSIDERABLE difference between tread temp and internal tire temp...SmarTire Gen II read "77 to 102 degrees" then he "stopped and used a probe pyrometer in the tread surface, which indicated more like 160 degrees, while rapidly cooling".

SmarTire sounds like a great tool to me. Agree with your need/plan to find out tread separation temp points ( low pressure induced heat related tire failure) so that one can extrapolate danger zone from cockpit info provided.

When YOU find out, let ME know!!!
