Pumping Gas

Tried to search this one out.

I have a 2010 SRT10 Coupe. When I pump gas, the pump always stops (auto shutoff POS) when the tank has about 10 gallons. No matter how I move the pump handle I can't get gas to flow in without it shutting off right away. What I have to do is trickle the gas out and it takes about 10 mintues to put the final 4 or so gallons in.

Does anyone else experience this?

Have you tried pumps at a different gas station? I've experienced the same but not at all gas stations.

Yes, same here, I've had that happen 3 times, 2 of those at the same gas station so I never go back there. I don't think anything is wrong with your car

On my 04 I have to hold the nozzle up side down and when it clicks off it is full, might only take a few cents more.

not trying to be funny... the car is "not" idling when this happens, correct?

my cars n trucks are allways running when i fuel em, and back in the day,i even had a cig danglein from my lip

No, not idling. Are you suggesting it consumes it as fast as it can go in

Thanks for the advice. I use Shell gas and it does this at all of the stations.

I will try upside down method.

On my trip to Charlotte I noticed that only pumps that gave me trouble were at Shell Stations. The one across the street from the Embassy Suites was the worst one I have seen. I didn't have much trouble at other stations. I should have checked to see who manufactured their nozzles at the Shell station.

I have a 2009 and have the same problem at many stations it seems to be getting worse. I did not have the problem at all the first 2 K miles. Seems like going to VOI and back home noticed it more than ever.

I've been to dozens of different gas stations and it's certainly hit or miss. Usually it works fine but there's ones where it doesn't. Some are just more finicky than others. I've never tried upside down though.

+1 to trying a different type of pump.

Shell station for some reason, I have to hold it upside down......otherwise, no problems....other than spending a lot of time at Shell for some reason

OK, normally I'm a smart alec but this time I was referring to when you're pumping gas into the tank while the vehicle is running you're constantly changing the pressure dynamics of the fuel tank. I thought maybe some gas stations might have more sensitive equipment than others.

Maybe I'm ignorant but why would anyone ever fill up a car while it's idling? Isn't that dangerous? And pointless? Unless you're an Indy racer in a pit stop

It's the gas station, I have had it happen on both my 04 and 08 SRT 10's at the same station at the same time. When I come accross a station that does it, I turn the nozzle upside down and pull it half way out and fill it slowly and never return to that station.

Could it be the fuel tank is not "Venting properly? Like as liquid gasoline is filling / going into tank, air is not exiting tank / filler tube fast enough ? Is there a Vent tube that could be restricted ? May be stupid questions, but had to ask

Dodge had recall for a similar issue on the Durango, they changed out the filler neck on my Durango. What the Durango was doing was a vent problem, gas would go in but then gas would gush out the filler when the air was trying to esacpe. This does not seem to be the problem with the Viper, infact one time I was getting fuel and it stopped and I went across the street and filled fine.

I sometimes leave a car (not the viper) running while filling up...it gets damn cold here in Colorado and if it's pouring snow, the engine might stay on...and I might even get back into said running car while it's filling up especially if the wind is blowing 20-30+ (carefully watching the pump handle to make sure that it doesn't overflow and cause a dangerous situation ).

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooo to answer your questions...maybe dangerous, IDK...but definitely not pointless.
