Explaining Viper things to you
First pic is the OE airbox on my '01 GTS.

You can see part of the filters, but the indentation blocks a portion of them. I have always been under the impression that is the rain dam.

I bought another OE airbox yesterday at a track sale. My thoughts were to save the one I have as ******, and take this other one and cut out the indentation and patch the top back for a dam-less airbox. BUT, as you can see in pic 2 there is an insert in there that blocks everything.

Was mine already removed?

Would completely removing all obstruction like I planned be a Texas sized stupid idea? I don't drive in the rain, so I'm not concerned about not having the rain dam. Still wanted one box with it for nostalgia.

BTW, the box I bought has different parts #'s as it is from either a '96 or '97, but it appears identical.

My OEM airbox looked like yours in pic #1. The baffle/closure didn't extend the entire width of the opening. Perhaps you have a GenI airbox? Here's a pic of my airbox with the baffle removed:

I've had my airbox off for a few weeks now and when I picked it up for these photos today I noticed all of the K&N filter oil leaked out from the filters. This is the first time its happened in 2 years. Very strange.

EU Vipers have the insert - one of the first things to remove here - restricts air flow!

I cut the rain baffle out of mine...and put a piece of textured plastic in...looks very factory. Whether it made a performance difference or not.....?
