working fast - 3 hrs to get heads off and pistons out. 5-6 to put it back together.

1st time i did it - 4 hrs to get heads off, 1 hr to get pistons out, 7 to get it back together.

I can do a head swap in less than 8 hrs now... pistons not quite as fast...

Cam takes adds quite a bit on top of that. A lot of parts come off the front of the engine. I had to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the front of the engine up for the cam to clear the AC condensor, unless you want to break the seal on the AC system - which I wanted to avoid.

Do you absolutely HAVE to handpick exact length pushrods, when changing the heads, or is that associated with rocker arms? Or are the pushrods selected when doing both rockers and a head swap?

If that question doesn't make any sense, then please edumacate me.

if you dont mill the heads then you dont change the geometry and if you use the stock rockers then the stock pushrods will work, BUT I dont know of anyone who has ever put a set of heads on that didnt go with roller rockers(I am sure someone has but why).

Heads and rockers are like peas and carrots, they just go together. If you are getting some heads done it is a "good" idea to send your rocker stand as well as a rocker to your head guy so he can make sure the geometry is right and mill the stands if necessary and then you will need to check pushrod length and get new ones to make sure the rocker adjustment is within the acceptable range so oilflow is not compromised as well as PTV clearance.

I would say a good 2 days worth of labor(probably part of the 3rd day) if everything goes well by someone experienced and is not interrupted.

Why did you have to pull the pistons for a cam and head swap?

I am still waiting for Joe to add those hours from his last head-change to get his average up to 2-1/2.

who says you have to pull pistons for a cam and head swap? you don't.

I know you don't have the pull them that's why I asked you why you did pull the pistons.

You stated it "1st time i did it - 4 hrs to get heads off, 1 hr to get pistons out".

You stated you done this more than once, so why did you pull them? Did you have to rebuild the engine more than once?
