R & J HID Kit Installation help

Hey guys,

Just wondering who else has the R&J HID kit for their viper and how they installed it. It's a custom install with wiring harnesses and all. Just wondering where you guys put the ballasts, where power was tapped from, ect...

After reading some of those other posts it seems its not that plug-n-play. Not sure what wiring is involved yet.
I got the 4500K kit as its the whitest bulb with very little blue :)

It is plug & play.

I did mine last year. I have had some trouble with the light bouncing when you hit a bump. Not sure why.

Possibly the weight of the ballast makes the housing bounce some. I put some foam under housing to compensate.

I put my ballasts inside the housing.

I cut out some webs on the back of the removable panel and used two little screws and some two-sided tape to hold the ballasts in. These are the older smaller units, but there is a lot of room in there so the newer larger units should fit.

P.S. I had to reverse the polarity of the plugs going to the bulbs in order to get mine to work. I simply disassembled the connectors the reassembled in reverse polarity.

I too also had to reverse the wires on my R&J kit... had it for a year with no problems... mounted the ballasts on the back for the housing cover.

I have the Philips kit. I mounted mine in the light box. The relay harness fit in there nicely too.

The power to the relays came from the positive jump start terminal.

Did you guys have to use the supplied relay? I was told it was optional and not required for the install. Does the stock lighting system supply enough power to ignite the HID system?

Mine are installed with no relay and doing fine in the Viper, but after I had trouble in my SRT-8 Jeep I ran a relay - only to find that one of the ballas/ignitor boxes was bad. Was really diappointing because I hate adding wiring to cars. Just is never clean when not in the original harnesses. I say plug everything in and see if it works. You can always go the direct power via relay route if the stock signal is not triggering the HID boxes.

No relay on mine eaither Mac. I have the 8000's in nthe lights and fogs. I mounted mine just like VPRVENM97 post above. If you have issues let me know, I can stop by and help or you can call my cell.

I know what my 07 project will be, GARAGE HEATER!

Other than the significant yet very brief start-up current, HID lights (at 35W each) pull less current than the stock 55W (ea) incandescent bulbs. The problem comes at start-up, where each bulb/ballast will pull as much as 15-20 amps (i.e. as much as 240W each), but only for a moment. So, normally, the only modification you have to make is to replace the 10amp fuse with a 20 amp fuse, and no need to use a relay.
