I had one fail but I also had a bad 02 sensor on the same side.
To MTGTS
I had stock cat failure at low km's, then replaced with aftermarket cats and experienced cat failure again shortly after. I would still be in the dark if it weren't for a VCA member mentioning that if the stock exhaust manifolds have a crack in them you will continue to blow out cats. ....
I want to help -
Random says the MTGTS' inquiry above is not from an original buyer, (as MT also stated) no documentation of years/miles. And the photo does not clearly even display a RT product. MT did not buy cats from us, but maybe the original owner did? But here goes:
1) Cats are mostly passive....their chemical 'catalytic' reaction is a
de-facto furnance that cleans and scrubs harmful emissions from auto exhausts, and other industrial applications. They flow clean air faster, dirty air slower.
2)
If you put UNBURNED FUEL in a furnace, it runs too hot. Dont Blame The Furnace.
3) As noted by Chad and others:
a bad spark plug, coil, wire, injector, oxy sensor, air sensor, manifold, or gasket can lead to a too-rich situation, and put FUEL in the catalytic furnace. This overheats and degrades the substrate. Ceramic fails faster than Metal Honeycomb. But NOT A DEFECT!
So many Things Affect what cat has to burn!
4) Random says that UNBURNED FUEL FOULING FINGERPRINTS [like those shown ] are very easy to diagnose.
I bet it looks obvious to most of you, too?
5) Auto applications are commonly rated by Cu Inches, but R.T. also rates/tests them by CFM, and guarantees flow rates. Random-Tech does not sell or re-brand cats like some vendors do.
Ask your vendor WHO MAKES THE CAT? R.T. are proud of their USA-made name, and their 5-year defects warrantee. They add an extra, costly "wash" of the prime metals, including platinum, to their HiFlow Viper substrates. This causes me to sell them with confidence. And they offered MT a nice discount on
out-of-warrantee cats. We would even discount that further, especially if we sold the cats originally. ??
6) But even GREAT, FREE CATS wont fix the problem that
fouled and burned out the cats in the first place!
7) Going catless as a solution to unburned fuel is hiding your head in the sand.....and catless has other problems.
8) MT, can I get clear chain of custody on these cats, and get you a deep-discount pair?
