I have read all the RB 1 threads and have a simple question - will all RB 1 radios fit all gen 3 Vipers? I am thinking about doing the swap and all the radios I am looking at show Viper compatibility from 2005 on up. Of course mine is an 04. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I don't see why it wouldn't. Hopefully some others can chime in but I think you would be o.k.

The RB1 will work in all Gen3s. Of course, since I have not tried every combo, I cannot be sure, but I have never read anything that would say no. Nothing changed in 2003-2005 in the radio department. The RB1 works in about every Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep made in the 2000s without the CANBUS system, which is all Vipers as far as I can tell. The Gen4 is the same as Gen3.

I just installed an RB1 in my Gen3, but its a 2005.

All RB1 info can be found here, although the site is temporarily down:

The Jeep page is up. This one says 2002-2009 Vipers

Other DaimlerChrysler vehicles: The RB1 will work without requiring installation modifications in the following vehicles:
Caravan (2002-2007)
Concorde (2002-2004)
Dakota (2002-2004)
Durango (2002-2003)
Intrepid (2002-2004; model year 2000 also confirmed)
Liberty (2002-2007)
Neon (2002-2006; 2000 SE and 2001-2002 R/T confirmed)
PT Cruiser (2002-2006)
Ram pick-up (2002-2006)
Sebring convertible (2002-2006)
Sebring sedan (2002-2006)
Stratus sedan (2002-2006)
300M (2002-2004)
Town & Country (2002-2007)
Viper (2002-2009)
Wrangler (2003-2006, requires special bracket)

Also, you will notice there are many part numbers for the RB1. Of particular note are the later ones that work with the iPod kit and more importantly, the EXTERNAL Amplifier.

P/N 56038629AB
P/N 56038629AC
P/N 56038629AD
P/N 56038629AE

(Note: The above radios are not compatible in vehicles having the factory Premium sound system, they do not have the circuitry to trigger the external amplifier)
P/N 56038629AG
P/N 56038629AH*
P/N 56038629AI*

(*Compatible with Chrysler's iPod kit)

I ended up getting lucky on an AI radio on eBay. Because the Viper has an amp (as far as I know), I would stick with AG, AH, and AI, which you will see on the sticker on top of the radio. Never tried the older ones, figured I would play it safe.

I've read about a few people with RB1s in their Vipers, myself included, who experience the "lock up", whereby the screen may or may not be black, the radio may/may not be playing, but no controls work. My theory is that it's not designed to experience a significant time difference between when you power up and when you push the red button (in a "normal" car, that slight time delta is merely a continuation of the turn of the key.)

What I've found about this through my own experimentation:
- Seems to help to ensure that the battery is topped up
- Seems to help to keep the radio off (button in) during the start sequence
- If it locks up, turn the radio off and give it a few minutes to recover -- you'll know it's back once the clock shows up on the screen

Hope this might help others, and if anyone has any better info, please add!
