Recall on 06 viper headers?

I had my 06 Vert in for new tires and they noticed an exhaust leak from the intake manifold. Replaced gasket (which showed signs of leak) but still heard a leak. Came to conclusion that it's coming from the collection point (i think they called it) on the header, and wouldn't be able to tell what was causing it without taking the headers off. I voted to not do this at this point since this wasn't really a budgeted for expense

06 had factory warranty, previous owner didn't get an extended one. Does anyone know of any history of such an issue in which case they were recalled ? Or similar issues?

I know a lot of people would use this an excuse to put new headers on -- i was trying to keep this car as close to stock as possible...

I heard a little exhaust leak on the driver side of my 06' last week. I have a 4 post lift so I got under the car and tightened up the 7/16" clamps that are right before the cats on both sides. The clamp is part of the factory flex braid hose/pipe. Noise went away. Easy fix if you can get under the car and if it is the same leak. Factory exhaust except for Corsa Track cat back.

They said they had those off and back on and the issue still exists....

While I have heard of a few cracked OEM headers on Gen III's...I have not heard of a Recall or TSB on same...nor are there any of either listed on Federal site.

Might also be a part of your 100,000 emissions warranty. Worth a look.

I'd try this good idea. I had a computer go bad on one of my vipers after the warranty, and the service mgr covered the replacement under the emissions warranty, he said at the time that it couldn't pass the OBD plug in test the way it was so he would write it up as emissions. Worth a try maybe.

My '06 had a leak in the driver's side exhaust manifold.... it was replaced under the extended warranty, but from what the dealer told me it is a common issue??

I had an Arrow rebuild done under the 7/70 powertrain warranty, and both of my stock manifolds were cracked. They weren't covered under the powertrain warranty and the price for a new set from Dodge was about $1800. It was just a perfect excuse to throw a set of M&M's on there!

I was told it's not uncommon, as the cast iron stock manifolds do not like the heat that the engine puts out.

Your manifold most likely has a crack. Best repair is to remove it and have it welded. Once rewelded they never crack again. Engines that are cold started a lot and driven short distances seem most likely to have this problem.

Mine are cracked also and I have an extended warranty, do we just go to the dealership we bought the car from and they know what to do? I don't think mine has a viper tech :-/

Not sure that there has been many recall items on the Viper in general. Here is a picture of the probable issue that you are having. Seems that many have this same exact issue including myself. It is most noticeable when starting - but can almost disappear when warm. The crack seems to develop right where Dodge decided to weld a reinforcing piece to the headers. It would certainly seem that there is a design/process flaw as the cracks seem to be in the same place in all that have had issues.

My car had an exhaust leak when cold not long after it was new. I got lucky, just tightened the manifold bolts and it's been fine since. Almost 47,000 miles now.

Yep. Had my driver side replaced a couple months back (extended warrenty) and it was cracked at the weld. In there as we speek for passanger side now. Tech said it was common and new headers are different.

Ugh. Original owner didn't buy extended warranty, and from what i'm reading the emissions warranty which would have covered this issue was only for 2 years... not sure how you guys are getting it covered under the powertrain warranty... any pointers for when I go to the dealer?

They didn't "offer" to cover mine under the powertrain warranty. I might could have pushed the issue and gotten them covered, but like I said earlier, it gave me the perfect excuse to put real headers on the car.

Had them crack on my 06. Viper Tech said he had seen a bunch of Vipers with the same problem. So many in fact that Dodge was out of stock on new ones. Fortunately dealer had a wrecked 04 he could pull them off of. Covered under extended warranty though.

the emissions warranty doesn't cover exhaust manifolds, just converters and PCMs really.

my 2005 had the same issue.
i thought it was gaskets etc.... nope, did all that and it still sounds a little leaky.

needless to say im going to toss the cross over. But i will take a closer look at my manifolds and replace them or goto headers!
