reconditioning hood \"speaker grills\"

my hood "speaker grills" are looking a little faded. I pulled them off and cleaned them with soap and a scrub sponge. they look a little better, I think that was all the dirt I'm going to get off them, but looking at an angle they look faded. is it possible to paint them? any ideas?

im sure if ya call jonB he can hook you up with a great used set or new ones. gotta be better than painting them. the holes would fill in id think that way.

Ben, mine were faded a little bit when I 1st bought my car. All I did was pull them off, buy some gloss black all weather spray paint from AutoZone and painted them. They look great and have had no problem with fading or chipping

when I went to Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle this yr a lot of viper guys had painted there's too-and they looked great!

did the same thing. lightly mist the color on the grille and it wont clog the holes. it will look fine.

I have my purge for my Nitrous through the passenger side vent and have to paint mine every year because the Nitrous whitens the grill. No problems yet.

I took mine off, wire brushed them down and then powder coated them silver to match my car, I i think they look way better in person...

Took a couple hours but made them look much better, did the same thing with may gascap(except i just polished it and used clear powder coating.

I also just had mine off and painted them with the same black paint from autozone and they look brand new. The rubber trim on mine was a little aged but couldnt find any new replacements (didnt look real hard). They were kind of a pain getting back in due to the recessed screws. I took electrical tape and lightly taped the screws to the end of the screwdriver because its hard to find hole, and if you drop the screw its going to get stuck in the hood pad.

Took mine off & painted them also. They did't come from the factory in gloss black. It looked like a cross between flat & gloss. I bought black trim paint from Auto Zone. It was a perfect match. Put a couple of light coats on. Holes didn't plug up & it looks factory.

Done! Thanks for the advice guys.

To clean them I removed the grills and the rubber strips, cleaned then with a scrub sponge and dish soap, ran them through a light wash, rinse and heat dry in my dish washer (no soap).

I bought this paint at Autozone:

Applied three light coats from various directions and here's the result:

You can also have them powdercoated mirror black of which we just did to ours. We offer a complete line of powdercoating services if you are interested. Turn around time is very fast.

Wow looks great. And what....you did not lost any of the screws. Lucky you. When I did mine I lost two of them and it is still inside the hood somewhere

um, yeah, I lost two screws too, but I had some extras...I even used a magnetic screw driver and still couldn't hold onto the front interior screws...I guess my car just gained a few grams of weight...

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. I tried using a magnet so I could fish mine out, but could never find them. I guess the value of our hoods is now about $17,000.04 with the two $0.02 screws thats now in them

yeah, what a horrible design, that inside front screw is not aligned with the hole in the hood, I wonder why they didn't use some sort of snap or something?

either way, the car looks better now...
