I removed the cats and resonators from my '97, and also removed the muffler. The idle sounded perfect with straight through pipes, but upon acceleration it sounded like a rice burner... I welded in 2 shortie glasspacks under the side sills, which tone down the noise a bit, but I am looking for what seems to be the absolute impossible sound from it. I am searching for a deep, rumbling, growling, mean sound from my '97 and with experimenting with different setups, it seems the sound I am searching for is impossible to get.
I really don't want the higher pitched "exotic" sound, but the true old "muscle car" sound. Is there anyone out there that may have a solution? I am just curious...I know it sure is nice to exit the Viper without burning the old legs since the cat removal! Has anyone tried the single chamber Flowmaster racing mufflers? I am curious about their sound effect on a Viper.

Thanks,
Mike

My car sounds like that.

Just send the heads to LPE, and upgrade cam/rockers and add headers-

I have the above with no cats/resonators, and it is a deep, loud growl. And my car only makes 530 or so rwhp. Did I also mention that it is loud?

Mike,
You may be searching for the impossible. The search for the deep, muscle car, V8 sound that you are looking for has been discussed many times around here. The fact is, you won't get a V8 sound out of a V10. Something about the firing order.

With some mods you can get a mean sound but won't be "the sound." Headers, no cats and a B&B system will make your Viper snarl. Throw in a set of roller rockers and you'll take advantage of that 97 lumpy cam for that lopey sound.

If you do find "the sound," please post because I've been looking for it too.

Hello,

While I do admit that getting a V-10 to sound like a V-8 is near impossible, I do have two recomendations.

1- Give up the quest for a V-8 muscle car sound. a V-10 has a unique sound, that unlike most other engine types, can be changed to you liking. However, the pulse of a V-10 is nothing like a V-8.

2- the most "muscle" sounding Viper exhaust is by far the B&B system, but it must be coupled with High-Flow cats to exploit it. It is much deeper than any system I have ever heard, and it has a steady pulse at idle thanks to a crossover before the tips. The best comparison I can think of for the sound is a Supercharged 454 big-block installed on a boat, gurgling through the water.

Good Luck!

I think the Borla has a deep throaty sound. There was much talk about Borla versus Corsa for sound preference. Louder is not always good. Do a search for the best sound clips.

I don't think anyone will accuse you of driving a "rice burner" with your car. That's just how they sound.

I'm quite happy with my Corsa catback and no cats....

Get Random Tech High-Flow Cats.. Just went through this.. I tried the cat-delete on my car. Drove it for 5 miles, went back to the exhaust shop and had them re-cut... SOUNDED LIKE GARBAGE... And did not run well... These cars were designed to have cats on them..

Mike,

I just finished mine with Randomtech catback with hi flow cats and I like the sound of it. I will be putting my side panel tomorrow and off to a long drive to burned the oil from the new system.
First I don't want to removed the OE cats but it gave me problem on the install. Talked to jonB of Partsrack and suggested to replaced it with hi flow cats. Checked the picture of the finished install. Good luck on your project :2tu:
