I don't usually rev it high but if there is a high rpm issue there is a underlying issue at low rpm as well. I have factory valvetrain that is unadjusted from stock.

Ok just got off the phone with Greg Good. I have never done business with Greg before but when we started talking valve train issues he is the guy to call. Greg took an hour of his time to explain to me exactly how our valve system work and a possible solution to my problem. He believes that I could be experiencing Lifter Bleed Down. He gave me many pointers and a few things to try to try and correct this situation so this weekend it starts.

I have a friend coming over and we have 2 main tests to complete this weekend
1.compression test just to make sure all internals are good
2.manual boost gauge run (tap a manual boost gauge into the vec line and see what it reads)

After this if there is no change and the manual boost shows that the VEC is good the next step will be rockers, pushrods and valve springs and retainers. Time to let the car breathe a little better and hopefully that will get me down to a manageable level.

All opinions are welcome :)

Greg, thank you very much for educating me, you definitely taught me a lot.

When you said lfiter bleeddown, you thinking of an oil pressure issue?

There's as much chance of the Vec boost readings being off as much as any guage. If that's what you're hoping for ... luck to you. Let us know.

Problem is that there is only a slight performance improvement while losing gas mileage and driveability.

Probably great for you guys unless you do a lot of highway miles like I do. It'll be interesting to see what you guys find for differences.

Not necessarily an oil pressure issue but a distance issue between the lifter and the pushrod. I can't explain it because of my lack of knowledge.

OK, one of the advantages of tubular pushrods and 1.7 to 1 rockers is that the 'freeplay' is adjustable.

I had a "rebuilt" 340 Challenger GIVEN to me decades ago. Once I fixed a few things, I figured out why it was "pay me later". Under WOT the engine would shut off for a half hour. Kinda sucked. 2nd time it shut off, I pulled the valve covers and loosened the rockershafts 1/8" and the engine restarted instantly.

The machine shop had shaved the heads, ground the seats and valves, then decked the block. Idiot didn't think that when you cut, cut, cut, the factory clearance is gone and compression and valve train experiences serious problems.

The only reason the car would run at lower rpms was because the hydraulic lifters didn't pump up and once they did the valves couldn't close shutting off the engine. Easy problem to solve and the reason I only go to machine shops that do ONLY what I ask them to do. What I did to 'fix' the 340 was use .020" washers between the rocker shafts and pedestals. Car went 12.9 at Seattle Raceway with a little shot of Nitrous. Stock engine, stock gear ratio and 4300 pounds with me in it.

Loved my 340 Magnum in my '73 Charger 4-speed BumbleBee. Yes, Yellow with the Black side stripe, factory rear wing, and power buldge hood. My high school car. Good memories and that little 340 had a huge cam, aluminum intake/Holley, headers, and 3:91 posi. Used to eat my friends SS Chevelle since I had the cam running about 4 degrees advanced and it would pull so hard at 6K! But I digress...

Damn, you too? I had to walk 3 miles to high school, no car. But somewhere around 500 cars or so, I made up for it.

My first ticket "Unnecessary Accelleration" leaving school. A whopping $50.00 back in 1980...or so. And to think I lived two blocks from school. Hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes.

By 1979 I'd won the Red Rooster Invitational and gotten second and thirds in other Drag Racing National Events. That was one of the first years for bracket racing. 20 runs in a day was common for test and tune days.

Mission Raceway had been sold by the Provincial Gov and they had already 'defaulted'/forgotten to pay the BCCCClub for the new track (that tool 14 years).

12 seconds was FAST, lol

A day later then expected but none the less I have more data. Compression test conducted on all cylinders. Manual boost gauge hooked up now, still no highway run yet. Photos of the spark plugs. At idle if I floor the gas the manual gauge goes right to 5psi, good sign. Just need to get her on the highway. Here are the spark plug photos, let me know if you see anything bad.

I agree with Phil. I see no excessive heat or fuel. Looks perfect - from what I can see.

Can you all point me in the direction for the best pricing on 1.7 Roller Rockers? Any of them will do since I will not be drag racing or beating up on my car except in small amounts. So far best pricing I have found is

Jon B : No longer carries internals
Roe:668 or so for harland sharps

I emailed Mike a couple days ago, I periodically check up on him to see what he has up for sale. Haven't heard back from him yet. I talked to GG as well and he said he can get ahold of springs and retainers but not rockers.

I would upgrade to the 3/8" pushrod. Are you still using the stock pushrods? If so, just measure them out and order a set to that size (7.500" I think).

With my TDs on stock heads had to go with a 7.70 pushrod if I recall. Got 3/8 rods through Trend. $130.00 or so. I still have the pushrod length checker FYI....
