Roll bar or Roll cage to run in the 11\'s??

What is required to run in the 11's or 10's in the 1/4 mile? A roll bar or a roll cage? A roll bar seems like it would not be too much trouble to install, but I would not want to install an entire roll cage just for the occasional drag race. Also are there any other upgrade that will get you kicked out for not having, if running 11's or 10's? I think there are several other requirements for 10's but the tech inspector will mostly be looking for a roll bar. This is for a GTS. Thanks

At NHRA tracks, for hardtop cars (GTS or RT/10 with hardtop installed):
<14.00: helmet
<12.00: NHRA rollBAR with sidebars; 5-point restraints; driveshaft loop (underbelly pan on Vipers works OK)
<11.00: Transmission shield, SFI crank balancer, fire jacket, half-shaft loops on some cars (e.g. C4 'vettes )
<10.00: whole bunch of other stuff you don't want to do to a street car

Re: Roll bar or Roll cage to run in the 11\'s??

For cars running 11.99 and quicker(convertables is 12.99) you must have a Roll Bar. Roll cage is for cars running 9.99 and quicker or 10.99 and quicker without the factory firewall and foward flooring.

The most important thing when considering a roll bar is that it passes NHRA tech inspection. A roll bar without a legal dimensioned side bar on the drivers side is not considered a roll bar by the NHRA. Yes, some tracks may look the other way on the sidebar rule, but why spend the time and money if it isn't actually legal for ALL NHRA tracks?

We have developed and tested in our own car a roll bar that has passed NHRA tech, and meets the specs of the NHRA 2001 rule book.
They will be available soon and the price for a complete and painted bar is going to be somewhere in the $999 to $1299 range.

Good luck with your search,

Tom

Unless they change the rules, you'll not be able to run at NHRA tracks if you can launch well

Similarly, you'll need a roll bar to do most track days. The convertible-only design of the '03 is one of the reasons I decided to keep my '01 a few extra years. If the aftermarket comes out with an add-on hardtop, of course...

Tom is correct about what is required, but in IHRA you don't need a bar on a coupe until you run 11.49 or quicker and most tracks don't say anything if your not out there every weekend anyways.
And if you have a faster than average viper like mine that runs 10's but you dont want to put a full 8 point bar in it Autoform makes a nice street bar, its not legal but it looks like it is and when they look in and see it they figure for a street car and a special occasion they will let it slide. But if your a die hard racer I would buy a legal bar.
