ROY H. SJOBERG P.E.

EXECUTIVE ENGINEER-VIPER PROJECT (Retired)
Daimler Chrysler Corporation
PRESIDENT OF VEHICLE OPERATIONS (Retired)
Heart International Inc.

?
Roy H. Sjoberg was named Executive Engineer-Viper Project in February 1989. In that position, he created and managed the Project Team for the development & production of the Dodge Viper. Very few cars in the history of the American automobile have captured the imagination of car enthusiasts worldwide as has the Dodge Viper RT/10, GTS, and the GTSR. What started as an outrageous concept muscle car at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit led to a bold corporate experiment and a street-legal production car in 32+ months. The "Platform Team" concept envisioned by Sjoberg to bring the Viper to production became the corporate-wide organizational structure for Chrysler. The five team visions have nearly come to completion with the GT-2 LeMans & FIA championships, the championship in the American LeMans Series, and the introduction of the VGX, the 2003 Viper roadster.

Sjoberg recently retired as President of Vehicle Operations with Heart International, a joint venture with International Truck that designed and developed a utility variant medium duty truck for non-military and military commercial applications.

Sjoberg is a notable keynote speaker on engineering, technical and team building/motivational subjects to such national organizations as SAE, SME, ASME, ASQC, and many local technical groups. He has been a consultant to the U.S. Air Force and ARPA on lean product and team concepts, resulting in a USAF initiative, code named "Viper".

Sjoberg is owner of Team R-Squared S LLP, which does automotive consulting for ASC, DCX, Ferrari, International Special Vehicles, Marsh Inc., & Paice Corp., and manufactures after-market automotive components under a MOPAR license. He was also co-owner of Vision Racing LLC, which prepared two Viper Roadster race vehicles to campaign in N.A. GT races. He is holder of over a half-dozen domestic/international patents and national acknowledged by SPE with three plastic parts of the year awards.

Sjoberg held various Engineering design and development positions at G.M. for 25 years, starting out in the Master Mechanics Office of Flint Metal Fabricating. His most memorable were 3 years as Development Manager for his longtime friend Zora Arkus-Duntov. Sjoberg joined Chrysler Corporation in February 1985 and held several Chief Engineer positions including Corporate Materials & the Minivan. He concluded his service with eight years as the executive in-charge of the Dodge Viper. Academically, Mr. Sjoberg is a Sloan Senior Executive Alumnus (MIT) and holds a BSME & MBA from the University of Michigan.

Sjoberg (born in Erie, Pa.) is married to Peg (born in Vermontville, MI) and they have three children - with at least two being confirmed fellow car "nuts". Hobbies are SCCA/IMSA competitive driving, boating, and traveling with Peg. Favorite saying, "If you ain't the lead-dog, the scenery never changes" and a life focus of "make it happen". When he "grows up", he wants to continue being a Concours D'Elegance judge (Amelia Island, Bay Harbor Concours, & St. Ignace Car Show) and compete in Vintage Racing events with his 1966 restored Corvette race car.
