I bought from Woodhouse and only paid my state sales tax...I don't think Woodhouse would be selling many Vipers if the buyer had to pay sales tax twice...Once is bad enough...

C'mon tgrtummy, that is an obvious sales tactic. You are only liable for sales tax in your own state. If, for some reason, another state charges you tax, you must pay the difference to California if you paid less than what California charges for your region of the state. AND I believe California has to refund you if you paid more to another state than what California requires.

I suggest you do some research on your own for some of these state tax and DMV questions because most of them can be answered at the DMV web site that MarvS gave you on your last post. Remember, knowledge is power, and in this case it holds especially true. You should go to the edmunds website as well for other questions concerning base price, luxury tax and gas guzzler tax. The more you know, the less they can screw with you.

Lux tax is paid to dealer. Sales tax can be paid to dealer then proof needs to be brought to your DMV and if the amount is correct then you're cool, if it was too low then they will have you make up the difference. Of course you don't have to pay the sales tax to the dealer and can just wait and pay it to the DMV.

When I purchased my '01 from Woodhouse, I:

Paid luxury & gas guzzler tax to Woodhouse;
Paid CA sales tax and registration fees to the DMV when I registered the car.

I'd hazard that your dealer doesn't want to lose a sale and is inventing problems where none exist. Call Bill P @ Woodhouse and deal with someone honest -- it's a refreshing change

You pay luxury tax to the dealer but no sales tax. Sales tax is charged only in the State where you elect to title your vehicle. Sounds like your local dealer is stretching the truth in making Woodhouse appear more expensive than they are. Bill will treat you right.

Believe me,

Luxury tax and gas guzzler to the dealer where purchased, and
Sales tax to the DMV in your local state (California in this case) The salesman is uh mistaken.
You can simply call DMV to confirm or I'm sure Bill P. will confirm this also.

I'd have a friend call the dealer and ask about selling the car to someone out of state. Then see how fast sales tax becomes a non-issue.......

Man I hate it when folks lie. But I hate it more when they lie about stuff that is so easy to find out the truth. Really insults your intelligence. Can only hope the natural selection process weeds them out in my lifetime.....

Glad you found the RIGHT dealer.

tgrtummy,

I just got my Viper delivered today from Bill P at Woodhouse.

I did NOT have to pay Nebraska sales tax. CA DMV told me I will have to pay CA sales tax when I license the car.

I experienced similar dis-information when I was checking out local dealers.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Luxury and gas guzzler fees are paid to the dealer. Sales tax paid to the state in which you register the vehicle. I bought my 2000 Gts from Fitzgerald in NH, paid them luxury and guzzler tax. Then, after I took delivery of the car and I registered it in NY, I wrote the check for the sales tax right at DMV office. Good luck.

I bought both of my Vipers out of state. The last one from Woodhouse Dodge and slow poke Billy P. California has some "goofy" laws...one of which definitely has it's advantages in your case. Do your homework and you'll be suprised!
