Save your soft top

Hey guys, I know many of you are thinking about removing the hardtops on your R/ts about now (if you haven't done it yet....).

These tops have a bad way of rubbing/tearing in the storage bag while in the car. I thought I'd show you what I do to keep my top fresh.... so far so good.

This a piece of soft foam packaging material, cut down to keep the metal parts from rubbing on the fabric...

Yeah, it's probably not worth posting a quick fix like this but I thought there may be guys out there who don't know their top is siting in the trunk and being ruined. Here's how to prevent the rubbing...

Good work. Is the Gen 1 top different than Gen 2? The reason I ask is the rear latches on the Gen 2 are a lot more hazardous than the front latches and deserve protection as well.

The Gen II storage bags have protectos that slide over the end of the rear latches, and that should protect the top. Do the Gen I storage bags have anything similar?

^ My gen 1 does not. I use the same spongy material to cover the rear latches. Guess I should have taken a pic.... I just wanted to let guys know there is a need to protect the fabric while in storage (even more so if the storage is in the trunk bouncing around).

I'm sure there is a more elegant solution but this quick and easy method seems to work pretty well for me.

Also the area where the windows seal to the top is different due to th new "slider" windows.

Not sure if this requires a reply. It's true that a bit of padding around the latches makes the whole thing a bit bulkier...but it still fits OK. Mine goes in curved side down, left side in all-the-way under the rear fender, right side goes in with a bit of gentle persuasion around the trunk seal. Once in, I generally turn it half way over so the curved side faces the rear (thus removing the added pressure points where the latches rub).

Your method may vary...
