Shelby GT500 to Viper...

Been a long time Shelby fan and Jan. 2013 took the plunge and bought a brand new Grabber Blue with black stripe GT500 with SVTPP - Every option except glass roof. Love the car and still amazed what Ford and SVT accomplished with this last generation. I thought I owned the pinnacle of American muscle cars.... I mean 662 HP 630ft llbs 202 mph no grille carbon fiber drive shaft recaro seats off the showroom floor...how could you go wrong? and for the most part i dont think i went wrong but i do want to trade her in as i have recently been snake bitten

Was thinking about Gen5 and fell in love with it when i first saw one in real life 2 weeks back at my local dodge dealer. SRT white, black stripes, sidewinder wheels and 8k off msrp...sign me up! luckily i
took a pause and went home to think about it further and do a little more research. I decided not go brand new again as i really want to avoid taking a huge bath in the car as soon as i drive off the lot. as it stands now on my shelby if i get rid of it today i figure i'll loose close to 18k after 8mths of ownership.

anyways i have narrowed down my decision to a Gen1 or Gen2 GTS. have not driven either but have test driven a gen3 so i do know it is very different than my GT500....and i am good with that.
i am almost at the point of purchasing and will post what i end up. Its down to a low mileage (7K) black 93 with Mark7 top, 02 ACR last edition with 24k miles, 02 GTS red with cognac interior 18k miles, 02 red with silver stripe 20k miles or 02 grey with silver stripe 7k miles....can you see why i am having difficulty deciding??

any comments would be appreciated...looking forward to officially joining the club!

02 GTS with cognac interior with 18k miles has been sold and my buddy bought it, he gave deposit today picking it up tomorrow. Great choices though.

Pa dealer, yep. Asking price 42900. I looked what they paid wholesale since I am dealer myself and they bought at Mannheim Florida for $40000. Plus auction fee and shipping to pa, small deal for dealer great deal for my buddy. Best of luck. Go with gts.

Your pics do this Shelby color combo no justice. This color needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. I am sure you will be happy with any Gen-1 or 2 Viper that you choose. I suggest that you really do your homework on the past history of ownership on the one that you decide to purchase. Good luck on your quest.

Go for a gts. Or at least 2nd gen rt10. The price isn't that much different and you'll be happier with a second gen for drivesbility. Plus, you'll have windows...

Tell him you will have to deduct $2000 off the price due to the absence of the stock ABS! Seriously, he probably concluded it has no ABS because he can't see the pump under the hood like most other ABS equipped cars. It is in the front fascia (bumper cover) under the left front headlight.

During the ABS transition starting in 2001 the ABS brake lines were black in color. The non ABS brake lines are natural finish which is silver in color.

If you sell your GT500 I can tell you for a fact you will miss the low end torque of the blown motor along with the hooligan quality of it's linear delivery. You will however get that down low sports car feel and proper handling that is definitely lacking in my '14 Shelby. You might want also want to consider a 2006 coupe-- add some headers, exhaust, proper tuning and 3:55 gears, and you might find that happy median.

I love my first generation. I bought a 1994 RT/10 from a member here and drove it from Michigan to Baltimore the same day with my dad. There isn't much to it, but the things it does have are great (like an interior light, and a radio). Having to snap the windows in and out of it hasn't gotten old yet, and the fact that you stow the top in the trunk or in your garage is just super cool to me (less weight at the track!). It was a really great car to drive for 12 hours too which surprised both of us. (Of course, we switched seats every 200 miles or so like little kids.)

That said, the longer they made these cars, the better they got. Each generation seems to be a little bit "better" for most people (glass windows, electric folding tops, functional locks, ABS, traction control, etc.).

Like Lawrenzo said you are going to miss that super charged power, the Viper is no where near that power level and the way it delivers it. I love my Viper and its the king of cool. but my GT 500 is the boss of power.

Plus you might want to test drive a Gen. II before pulling the trigger. The Gen. II is much more spartan then the Gen. III you test drove.

Lots of great input here. I'd certainly support the recommendation to see/drive a Gen II before purchasing. The Gen II is an awesome machine but nothing like a new Mustang/Vette or even newer Viper. It is very raw from a driving experience. If that is what you are after you'll enjoy it. If your looking for the appearance and expect it to drive like your Shelby you'll be sorely disappointed. My Gen II is the most exciting car I have to drive. I am used to late '60's and early '70's American muscle cars and the Gen II is very similar, just a lot more power. I also have a C6 Vette. Most impressive engineering of any car I've owned for the money. However, nowhere near the excitement of the Viper. I drive the Vette when I need to go somewhere. I drive my Gen II Viper when I need an adrenaline rush. I never get out of the Viper without a smile on my face.

I can tell you first hand that the GT500 is nuts when it comes to power and brute muscle, but the driving experience of the Viper is truly unique. When you are in the Viper, you are a rock star. When you are in the GT500, you are in a nice car, but no where near the rock star status of the Viper. Not sure about you, but around my parts, you never see Vipers. They are a sight to behold. I would suggest driving a Gen II and going for the cleanest car you can find. If you want power as well, there are a few nice Twin Turbo Gen II's on the market right now that are very reasonable priced. Good luck in whatever you decide.

ACRSNK, well said, thats it in a nut shell. When ever I am in my Viper its a circus, people crowd around it, follow me, everytime I get gas its a crowd. I love it.

dont go for any other viper but the gen v it is simply the best viper to date.The genv in comparison to the gen 1 &2 is night and day in handling driving.All the vipers are great looking cars especially the gen 1 & 2 however the gen v is just simply the best.

That Shelby model you have is very nice however you may take a big hit when selling or trading it in of course. From what I read, the Shelby attained a top speed of 190 mph in testing. To match the brute performance of your Shelby though, you should look at the Gen 4 or 5 Viper only IMO. The Gen 2 is awesome as I had one of those too but the performance of the Gen 4 or 5 is in a league of its own.

I don't know if you bought a Viper or not, But I have a ROush Stage 3 model 2013 ,Plus a 2002 dodge viper ACR with 4,300 miles
On it. As far as driving the ROush with saleen adjustable shocks and different rear end set up, it drives like a Cadillac
But the viper is a much better well tuned fine machine it drives alot tighter and the power is put down to the rod alot better,

I traded my 08 viper in for a GT500 and I owned a 01 viper and a modded 95 gt mustang so I am a sports car ******. Basically for the driving that i do, the cars are equally powerful and fun to drive, but the gt500 is different machine all together just for the mere fact it sits higher. Just for comfort I love the shelby with its amenities, but the response from the viper steering wheel was awesome, I felt one with the road. I am slowly getting used to the shelby's feedback, but with the stock suspension the shelby will never fill like it is on rails. Would I go back to a 08 viper? No. Would go to a GenV? Yes. Would I go back to an 01 viper? Yes.(Sapphire Blue w/cognac interior, to me i was the prettiest car I have ever seen. Can't believe I sold it)

With the GenV at 115k plus and the GTR at 115K plus I will have a decision to make in the future.

I cant compare a Roush to a Shelby, but the Shelby is a will tuned car equal to the vipers I have owned.

I just traded my 2008 GT500 in for a 1998 GTS silver with blue stripes . I have had a Mustang in my life for the past 20 years. I loved the Shelby but I feel like I am out with a rock star when I drive the Viper, plus the Viper handles so much better and puts down the power. At first I was like my GT500 has 500 horsepower and the Viper has 450 HP, but the Viper puts the power down unlike any Mustang I have ever owned . The viper is in a another category it's hard to compare the Gt500 to any Viper

This statement is the complete opposite in the real world. A used 2013 GT500 is worth about 90% of it's original purchase price, while my 2K mile 2013 Viper GTS has pulled offers in the 50-55% of MSRP range- Dodge totally screwed over the early buyers, and the $15K cert did nothing to mitigate the damage.

You are definitly right when you say the 2013 GT500 is still worth almost what they were selling for new, but I think its more because it's the end of an entire breed with the big 5.8l supercharged motor - we will never see another 5.8 in a Mustang because they simply won't fit. This has made the cars very valuable because with only a small investment of about $4000.00 you can gain 200 hp and make it an absolute killer on the street. The Viper will always have the V10 and unless they stop making the car period, you will always be able to buy a new one - thus the huge price drop for the used ones. Now if they do stop making them as some people believe Fiat might do, your GTS will probably be worth a fortune in the years to come.
