I bought mine in Oct. and love it. First choice is color. That will determine the year in many cases. I recommend you read, read, read. Read all you can find. Viper club homepage has a link on buying tips. A good search engine will turn up the Chrysler press release on the new (back then) GTS. Lots of good info. Low miles and a warranty was important to me. Lots of cars on Ebay as well as Viper club classifieds. The search is part of the fun. Good luck.

In 97 some of the manifold gaskets were problematic, Dodge authorised the installation opf fresh gaskets. The 97's went to a stronger forged wheel (96 was cast and has a less glossy finish), in 98 they hand polished them. But if you really want to know everything take JonB up on his offer of a telephone call, he is the man as well as a 96 owner.

The best mod is an experienced driver and the best way to get experience is to respect the power and torque and take it very easy the first few months, especially in winter when tires are cold and hard.

A warranty is just money in the bank. Should something ever go wrong an your rare and expensive car you are out only the deductible. It's health insurance for your car and peace of mind for you. The cars are solid but why take chances?

SnakeCharmer,

I was in exactly the same boat this last year. Really wanted a Black GTS, but only the '96 and '97 were in the price range. I got a '96 with 15,500 miles in July from a local dealer and was very happy.

Bill is right, think about color first. Most of the differences in the GTS are cosmetic. If you have any specific questions feel free to Email me.

Good mods are cat back exhaust systems, smooth tubes and K&N air filters. A full exhaust system with headers sounds great to me, but may be too loud for some people.

Get in contact with your local VCA chapter and go to a meeting. It is a great chance to see lots of different Vipers and compare lots of different mods. You will find that Vipers are a lot like Harleys. No two are the same and almost none look like they did when the manufacture shipped them.

Good luck!
