side pipe swap, please advice

i thinking about converting to the original gen 1 side pipes on my 1999 gts.

will i have anyproblems with my rear tires heating up. And will this make my side sills cooler sence the exhaust wont have to be traped on the sides anymore sense it has a closer outlet, or will it be hotter inside sence the outlet is right by the doors?

will it sound diffrient?

what do you guys think.

No tires heating up and Not cooler, but to cool it down do some high flow cats, exhaust sound might be anoying because its alot louder with drone on a GTS, I converted to sides and ended up using the Corsa srt10 track system and the drone dissapeared but still is louder than stock and it is at your ear.

Can not answer, but I would guess, yes it will sound different. My real reason for replying is I will be selling a set of stock sills in the spring if interested.

I did some research on this and I was going to do the same thing.

it wont be any cooler unless you remove the cats or put hi-flow cats in. Most of the heat comes off the Cats.

yes it will sound different, instead os sounding like a v-10 it will sound more like an I-5 because the exhaust doesnt cross to even out the sound. The car will also appear louder in the cockpit, because it will exit right under the windows.

I love the look of the sidepipes, but i wasnt super keen on the sound.

Anton, Did you check out FLX109's photos under his name? His side exhaust is awesome. Here is one of his photos:

I know at least one or more guys here that did it and it was too loud in the cabin, and I believe they removed it but if I had a non-stock car, I would do it in heartbeat as you have to love a side pipe car (not too many on the street).

Looks awesome, but it is louder - I ran both stock cats and mufflers on each side. Tried high flow cats too. Ran a bit cooler, but louder. Finally, after 4 years I converted back.

No issues heating rear tires.

No appreciable change in side sill or cabin temperatures either - at least not just from converting to side exhaust. I would recommend a heat wrap, such as Roe has. A sort of thermal blanket... Helps some with both sill and cabin temps, but you still won't want to lay your hand on the side sill...

And don't forget, you'll need to relocate the rear O2 sensors...

Anton, I did the side pipes on my 99 gts Oreca replica several years ago but I just had holes cut in the side covers, used gen 1 brackets, polished tips and high flow cats-no mufflers-It is VERY loud, but a viper should not sound like a ups truck. This is a lot cheaper than the factory side exit pieces but they look nice too. Good luck...

stock sidepipes sound like an L-5. Add borla headers and a loud as heck muffler and it'll sound BAD. I love my '95 going under bridges. Loud, but worth it. I'm not your average Joe, however.

I ran sidepipes on my gts with b and b headers and borla mufflers. It looked great but the sound got to me after awhile. The day I switched back to rear exit was probably my most enjoyable Viper day. The car felt new again.

I have a 97GTS and it had Borla cat back system when I bought it. It was way too loud for my taste and, boy did it drone!!! I am old school and have had cars in the past with side exhaust and loved them. In my opinion, the GTS "rocks" with side exhaust. I stayed with the stock cat, then installed Hushpower 2 by Flowmaster. I brought 3.5in pipes off the mufflers and polished the tips, then coated them with VHT clear. I used Gen 1 side sills. I am very pleased with the sound and markedly decreased drone. Everyone has their likes and dislikes, this is my .02.
