Side Sill Heat Measurement . . .

Hi. I have been in contact with my local Clearbra (www.clearbra.net) dealer/installer about application of the clear protectant film to an SRT-10 Viper. Specifically, the coverage area would include the side sills covering the side exhaust pipes. He felt that the Clearbra film (12 mils thick and "dual layer" film as opposed to about 8 mils and single-layer for 3-M/Xpel based products) could withstand fairly high heat and resist yellowing and cracking. However, he was not sure how hot the side sill area actually gets. I know this is a question others have had on the board.

Would a current owner be willing to drive their car for an extended period (45 minutes to an hour) in normal to high heat (65 to 80 degrees F) and then take a temperature measurement of the sill surfaces (exterior and also inerior where the heat warning sticker is)? Not sure what the best method would be for measurement (thermal probe from Radio Shack?) Anyway, I know this a lot to ask but I would appreciate any efforts from those who are curious about this.

Thanks again,

/Rich

Side sill heat does not appear to be significantly different with the SRT. There is something about the airflow that brings underhood heated air into the cockpit. Over the windshield and over the door. The bacon and eggs cooking exhibit was all wet. But it is nice a Z06 owner can come here and remind us of it.

Viper SRT, just let me know when the heat gets to be too much for ya. I am sure we can work something out with the Z06. ;-)

Yeh, but you can't roast a turkey on it like a GTS!

Just set the bird in the passenger seat and it will cook right up...add a couple of potatoes on the center console and you about have a whole meal! (Wish I could say that I'm just joking. *sigh*)

Hey, look at the bright side. The SRT makes for a great portable hibachi. My wife and I like to cruise to the beach, park the grill and throw a couple juicy sirloins on the side-sills. Seven minutes on each side while I enjoy a couple of frosty Harpoon IPAs; then cap it all off with a nice Cohiba SigloVI. Now if that’s not heaven……what is? :)

See the post on,"Heat inside the SRT" and I've posted the only reasonable solution to this problem. I see no drawbacks with this mod.

Skip, the catalyst free approach did not eliminate the cockpit heat for me. The sills are cool and not an issue. However, heat coming over the windshield and door continues to be excessive. Clearly better than stock, but not comfortable in hot weather with the top down.

The only guarantee I have is that it will be cold until next spring. Course it won't be driven either!

I have the 3M clearbra on the nose and sills of my SRT and I drive the car here in Arizona(read hot). Currently have no issues with the product and am very happy with it.

Hey everyone. Thanks for your replies.

It seems like it may be a bit involved for someone to do something as precise as using some sort of temperature probe on the side sill area. Barring that, could someone who has just driven an extended period (45 min to two hours) in fairly average to warm temperatures (65-80) just put their hand on the sills in a couple of areas (please test the area first quickly with your hand, I don;t want to be responsible for someone hurting themselves) to just give an estimate of the warmth (lukewarm, warm to the touch but you can keep your hand on it, you can keep your hand on iut but not for long, and last, but not least, oh my god it was scalding hot and the blackened, blistered skin is peeling off my hand, etc.).

If you could feel on the interior of the sill (near where the warning sticker is) and on the actual outer section of the sill (the section exposed to the elements near the actual hole for the side exhaust).

Thanks again for your help.
