I didn't want to hi-jack the other side sill thread currently circulating since I wasn't sure my problem was the same. This is the only noticeable paint issue on my viper. It looks like one of those cigarette burns that you see when a cigarette was left to burn on a counter top or something. It's located on the top of the front end of the passenger side sill and gets covered when the hood is down. Does this look familiar to anyone? What caused it?

If it's totally smooth, I doubt you have to worry. Also, the 2001's didn't have the 'bad design' side sills to my knowledge. It almost looks like you were checking the oil one time and dripped on the sill - and then when the sill heated up, you got a stain.

It is smooth...it was there when I purchased the car last year. It may well be some kind of stain...I just wasn't sure if it was one of the 'side sill issues' that I read about in other threads.

Any chance it could be a heat/burn mark from the other side? Tiny exhaust leak at the bend? I think there's a fold gap in the insulation near there. Is it extra hot there after a drive? (Yes, I know the whole sill is hot but....) It does look a bit like a roasted yellow paint mark...

BTW, It's pretty easy to remove the sill to inspect it.

There is a detail shop in Lakewood called Intrigue that could probably get it out. I am taking my viper there this weekend to get the whole car buffed out. Last time I was there they were doing a black viper.

That is the spot where the clearcoat scorches if the cats get too hot. I had my car run too rich as a result of a shot battery not putting constant enough juice to the PCM and toasted both side sills and the bottom of both of the small painted pieces right above them.

The stock cats produce way too much heat. You are better off to go with high flow cats or some Roe Racing exhaust insulation wrap.
