Yes..that stain... you can blow it up with your windows picture viewer...

I'll amend what Plum said.... we need a GOOD pic.

Do you mean the rust colored stain on the sill in the lower right? Can we get a closer shot??

it sure looks like the cats burned the sill. is it the same on the other side too ?

that is by far the worst silver sill i have ever seen. that burn goes down about 8-10" further than it should IMO. what does it look like in front of the door ( on the sill )

how many miles on this car ?

26k on the car... I believe it's the same on the other side... I called a dealer that showed up on the carfax and actually spoke to the Tech that worked on the car in 2007. He said that the owner reported a mild burning smell and he seemed to recall finding some aftermarket insulation that was incorrectly installed so they trimmed or removed some... It does seem that sills are a big topic on this site... The Tech that looked at it today didn't seem to concerned and said the residue wiped away... Go figure... a used Viper with a story...:D

silver cars NEED high flow cats at least if not NO cats....then repaint them, it will look like new. trust me..lol

high flows will still yellow but it takes a lot longer for it to happen. no cats keep them silver forever

I agree on the high-flow cats - that would be a good investment. It would also be nice to figure out what caused them to overheat like that. Any aftermarket computer stuff on the car? Any CELs or codes noticed when it's been hooked up to the scanner? For whatever reason, you're running pretty rich on both sides of the engine. At least it's both sides evenly - that decreases the possible 'worst case scenario'. If it were just one side, the odds of you having a burnt or bent valve go way up. These cars have a tendency to not over-rev very elegantly and it's not unheard of to have a valve tap the cylinder and get bent and then burnt all to hell. From there, you're pumping fuel straight into the exhaust stream and that will overheat your cat in a hurry.

I'm leaning towards the Cats overheating... I will probably have them removed... I plan to register the car as limited use.. I spoke to another guy in NJ who said that he removed his cats and also does the limited use thing to get around the emmission inspection.

Your biggest problem is going to be removing those blingy and glued on shiny ass sill plates w/o leaving the factory sills below looking like crap.

Yes, they are blocking access to removing the screws that hold the side sills on.

Really...wiped away. The tech wiped the brown residue away...I was under the impression that if the cats burned the sill, then it wouldn't be a 'wiping away' condition...sounds fishy to me :dunno:.

If the residue wiped away it was likely caused by water that had iron in it. Iron comes from steel, like what your car chasis is made from. Like what rust is. I would pull the sills and investigate this for sure.

Sills being burned are not gonna wipe off

Re: Slight Brown Residue Where the Clamshell Meets the Top of the Door Sill on a 98 G

The Tech that worked on the car in 2007 that I was able to speak to indicated that some sort of aftermarket heat insulation was added so that would seem the likely source... Nonetheless, I'm thinking that the sills will have to come off and I'll probably remove the cats as well if that reduces the heat...

Agree. If the stuff really wiped off, I would think it's a rust stain. In that case I would be worried about a flood car (thats the Houstonian in me). There should be stains elsewhere. If it's a burn it won't wipe away. Will the dealer send you a picture post-wipe?

In any event, it would be a two second determination in person. You need to look at the thing or get it inspected.
