I've got the SmartTire system on my car now (all 10 wheels.)
I noticed that the system consistently reads 2.5-3 pounds less than what I measure with my tire pressure gauge.
I called SmartTire to see what's up. The answer is that the pressure sensors are not altitude compensated. They are reading absolute pressure as opposed to relative pressure. For performance purposes, you need to fill your tires according to relative pressure.
So, if you're running at altitude, you may want to take this into account when asessing the tire pressure readings from your smart tire system, and setting up the normal pressure levels for your tires.
