Well, that dang 11-second 1/4 mile continues to elude me, much like it did in my GTS. Ah well, I know it should be very easy if I can get some more passes in. Track was ridiculously packed tonight and I managed four runs in four hours. Yuck. First run cut a great light: .501. With a 2.03 60' time I ran a 12.27 @ 115.1 mph. Next run, well, you don't want to know what happened. Still, I thought a 13.3 was pretty respectable considering my trap speed was a whopping 79.27 mph. My 60' was a 1.906, so I blew a great opportunity.

The next run netted another 2.03 60' with 12.21 @ 116.3 mph. Then came the last run. No .501 light on this one, I was attempting to load up some easy listening from Korn and looked up to see a green light. Oops: 1.625 RT. But once I said, "HOLY CRAP!" and nailed it to catch the guy now in front of me, things went better: 1.895 60' time with a 12.041 @ 115.19 mph.

Now, the trap speeds continue to baffle me. Indeed, one Corvette guy that runs there said it was consistently showing 8 MPH less than what he was running at another drag strip not too far from here. So I did something I never do: I watched the speedo through the traps on the last run. As per an earlier suggestion, I was trapping in 3rd gear. As I crossed the final markers my speedo showed over 120 mph (didn't look close enough to figure how much over). More importantly, I nudged the rev limiter literally as I was crossing the traps - again in 3rd gear. It is my understanding that with 3.07 gears and 19" wheels that the rev limiter is around 124/125 mph in 3rd gear (correct me PLEASE if I am wrong about this). Mind you, I would usually shift the GTS into 4th shortly before the end. I did this same thing with the SRT until someone "in the know" suggested otherwise. Tonight was the first time I trapped in 3rd gear (2 of four times - the 13.3 trapped in 6th...). Curious!

One final note: There was also a bone-stock 2000 GTS running (11,000 miles on it). He was consistently trapping at 110-111 mph. We won't talk about his times as he is a new owner and just getting accustomed to the car. Let's just say that he beat a C5 Vette by .30 and the Vette ran a 14.20 on the only run I watched (and photographed). I think his best time that I heard about was a 12.70 @ 110 mph. Great guy and a GORGEOUS GTS. Hope we see him at one of our Viper meetings soon!

A few nice runs there Chris!

What do I need to run there? Thinking a helmet... anything else?

Helmet and long pants, although I saw several guys out there tonight in shorts. Go figure. LMK when you want to go and I just may join you! "Test & Tune" nights every Wednesday & Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 PM at KCIR. Thursdays are "bike nights" but I am tempted to see if any cars show up since they seem to run a TON of bikes on Wednesdays and Fridays anyway...

Oh, and I think I misspoke about nudging the rev limiter. Somebody said that is VERY bad (which I know). I hit the factory governor which kills (I think) the throttle at 6250 RPM's. No way I would endanger my baby irresponsibly.

Good runs Chris, but remember the trap speed is averaged over the last portion of the track - it's not your instantaneous speed as you run through the traps.

Ah, now I remember somebody mentioning that before. So, now I am still baffled as to why the trap speeds are so low. And hitting the shutoff (6250) in 3rd as I cross the last traps means I am pretty much at the limit without shifting. If I can get some more passes in I will try different shift points, using 4th, etc. C'mon 11's!

The track was off, plain and simple. If your mph/rpm deductions are close to correct and you were traveling, say, 120 mph at the end of the track you would have had to have been traveling 110 mph only 66 feet earlier to trap at 115. So unless you accelerated 10 mph in about 1/3 of a second, the track apparatus wasn't calibrated properly.

Chris,

Just an observation from some of the pro's I've watched...

They don't focus on "cutting a good light".. they just go when they feel the rpm's are perfect, and focus on the best ET.

Sometimes when you anxiously await the green... it tends to flub your more important rpm's and shift points.

Great point. My best times come from sitting there until I am ready, not when the light turns green. Chris you shoul;d give that a try. It really helps you stay focused.
