So, how many of you guys have done a gear change yourself?

I was going to do the gears upgrade myself over the winter to 3.55, but the job looks like it might be beyond my abilities, mostly because the tools needed seem to be very specific to rear end work. At least that is the way the Viper manual makes it look.

Any experiences out there with this?

I thought about it at one time but like you said there are very specific tools such as the spreader that I don't have and don't wish to purchase that changed my mind.

You should have it done professionally. When you have it done you can change the clutches and freshen up the entire assembly. I wouldn't even attempt to do it myself, you need special tools to do the job.

I've always viewed ring and pinon set up's as an art form. You should probably leave the actual set up of the gears to and experienced shop that does them. You can easily pull the rear and take it to someone. I don't know where in NY you are, but there is a shop near me that has done a few of my rears and has always done a great job.
