I own a 1995 Viper. Does anyone know what could cause the speedometer/odometer gauge to stop?

Yesterday I casually drove around for an hour or so and stopped a few times. Then I went over to my uncle's house and gave a ride to him and my cousin where I got on it a little hard but never went over 5,000 rpm and 100 mph. 10 minute rides at best. Then I shut the engine off for 45 minutes while looking at his 1969 Roadrunner being restored.

When I started the car the speedometer/odometer gauge didn't move. Tach, oil, temp and all other gauges were fine. Car sounded and drove fine. It seemed to be idiling low when pulling in the garage but I could have been paranoid at that point.

Have you had a clutch or any reason tranny work?? If so, check the two or three plugs on the tranny. We put a cluth in a friends car a year ago and one of the plugs came loose. His car did the same thing. One way to check is to roll about 5 miles an hour and check to see if it grinds reverse. If it does ,it is the lock out plug on the tranny.

The speedemeter and odometer are simply a "plug in" behind, in the dash. Quickly just contort your body to just look under the dash and make sure it's pluged in. For some reason , it might have jiggled free or got loose somehow. Look at the bright side now, you're not putting any miles on your viper..

OK...this is weird. No tranny or clutch work...thanks.

Car sat overnight. Started up and speedometer ran fine. Drove for hour stopping and starting 3 or 4 times.

Fnially got on it a few times through a few gears. Again, speedometer fine. Shut car off for 30 minutes and restarted. Now not working again.

I'll check the connection behind the dash and follow the wire over the tranny as I'm told chaffing is possible since it sits on the trans. Maybe it's wiggling loose.

Hopefully a prior owner did not "Play" with the connection to keep the mileage down?

If you have any service done at the dealer, you can double check the computer mileage to verify that the odometer mileages jives with the computer mileage.
