I took the long drive from Central California to Willow Springs to Visit Russ and his new Comp Coupe and finish up my break-in miles. I will post a few photos tomorrow after I e-mail them to Russ. Russ - your CC looked awesome!

Arrived back home with 505 miles on the new snake. That number sounds familiar...

Looking forward to my next ride!

Do you think 500 is enough? Are these engines run in before installation in the car? Why only 500 now?

I know with my engines I have built we put them on the dyno, run and check for leaks, make all final adjustments and let 'em eat. But these are not street engines.

Please ed..ja..ma..kate me.

I don't have my manual with me - but if my memory serves me correctly, it said 500 miles with no more than 4,000 rpm and to vary speed up and down the scale while staying within the speed limit.

I'll read it again and see if I misread.

Disconnecting the battery is supposed to do it, but I found that unless I physically disconnect the computer wiring harness from the computer stored codes do not get reset(check engine light).

Ever since I found out that the only way to completely reset the computer was to unplug the harness that is the way I have been doing my computer resets.

Russ,

I understand the oil change, but why reset the computer? Is this an unwritten rule or something that Dodge publishes?

The reason I suggest resetting the computer is because when you are breaking the car in you are driving it very easy and light throttle for 500 miles. The computer in a viper learns how the car is being driven and adjusts programing accordingly.

After break in the last thing you want to do is drive it slow and easy, and at that point that program is no longer good for you. I am sure after a while the computer would re program itself to your new desired driving style but, that is just too long for me.

Break in miles are mainly for making sure there are no defects in construction of an engine. On any car I own break in takes about 400-500 miles.

And after 400-500 miles its off to some VERY heavy abuse. This has always proved to be the best way to make sure an engine is broken in properly.

At the last local Viper dyno day my car pulled more power than ANY other viper with similar mods, even more than the legendary 96 and 97's.

PS. At the end of the break in cycle you should always change your engine oil, and reset the computer.

OFFICIAL HERB HELBIG RESPONSE TO BREAK-IN INQUIRY:

The Guru of break-in's has always been respected for his PVO wisdom, and has now further clarified the simple break in procedure:

"The break in procedure will work for the new motor. if the car will be driven particulaly hard after 500 miles (liked raced), the break in period should be extended to between 750 and 1000mi"

Thanks Mr Helbig!
