I'm sure there is a simple answer to this question but every one I talk to isn't sure....:dunno:

What problems are involved with installing a "built" SRT RAM auto transmission in a Viper? I'm guessing there are problems or we would see more of them.

-Bellhousing should bolt up, correct? That saves the huge cost of the adaptor plate to use a powerglide. I'm told the adaptor plate is the most expensive part of the swap.

With all the talk about using auto's in drag cars, the SRT RAM trans. would seem like a cost effective way to go.
(I have been quoted about $10K for a powerglide swap...:omg:)

Thanks.....:eater::eater::eater:

I would never put a diesel transmission behind a viper. The converter alone will weigh about 50lbs and kill a ton of power. If you're going auto, go TH400.

Mike,

In the SRT Ram trucks the auto trans is a serious weak point. The reason you don't see those trannys in Viper cars is that they ****. Almost all of the quad cabs with decent power adder mods blow the tranny up.

Even those transmissions that get built won't hold up to any substantial power levels. The truck guys don't have any good alternatives.

1Fast400 hit the nail on the head. The TH400 has been proven to be the way to go.

The V-10 SRT Viper truck has the diesel transmission? (48RE?) What is the difference in weight? Will the TH400 bolt up to SRT Ram bellhousing?

Figures...:(

(I can't believe I'm going to agree with Mike on something, but...)

The 48RE is a great HAULING transmission.
It's not a very good racing (track or strip) transmission.

Suncoast has done some stuff with them to help get a little more HP to the wheels, but they are MASSIVE HP vacuums (about 25% or more).
IIRC, DC Performance also did some tricks to Mike Brady's 10-second quad-cab transmission. Might be worth a call to Dan.

I don't know if the TH400 bolts up or if there's a conversion kit for it, but that'd be my choice too.
SO MANY mods available, cheap to work on, quality parts readily available, and it's what they put in the Bently Arnage. :D

Brady's transmission was done by westminster trannies in CA. The same people that did mine after ATS and after suncoast. I sent the tranny to a board member on viper alley to go through before putting the truck back together, just to be safe. After seeing his picture evidence, I would NEVER use them. I spent 7k dollars on a transmission from them, but half the stock parts were still used. Transmission was within a few 100 miles of blowing, I had 400 miles on it.

It's best to avoid that combo at any cost. Stick to the TH400. It has been behind my current TT viper and will be behind the new one that just came out of paint. ZERO issues so far. UnderGround did all the work.

Does your dad know you're running an auto in your drag car?!?!?!?!?

The Suncoast mod'ed transmission in Bone's S/C+N2O setup worked great, even on a few road trips.
I haven't talked to him in a while, but I'll bet it's still going.

Someone on The Alley owns a wrench?
I wish we had a BS flag emoticon here.......

SUMMARY: Don't use the 48RE if you want to drag race.

Time and time again in many kinds of cars. F-bodies, Corvettes, Supras. You name it. You want to go fast drag racing or just want an auto. TH400 is where it is at.

What's amazing, is that I bought a car that had an auto in it and I decided to leave it in there. I'm sure if you're up to date on your racing, you know that hardly anyone races a TRUE clutch car anymore. Of course, my car is a street car, one that I've put 1000's of miles on this YTD. I just happen to race it as well.

There was nothing wrong with the suncoast transmission I had. I never said there was. Go back to VTCOA and you'll see where I sold it for about 3500 to someone on the board. I assume it's still being used to this day. I was attempting to get the best parts possible, that's why I called the guy that did brady's transmission.

GRCFORCE327 is his name. Do a search of his posts, he's a VERY sharp transmission guy. He offered to look through it for me. I just wanted to make sure everything was perfect before putting it back together. The documentation he did taking it apart was amazing. For that money I spent, I expected quality parts to be used. I never thought of cracking it open when I got it. What benefit would I get from lying about any of this? Do you think a guy in a small shop in CA gave two craps about a guy in NC? When dealing with a local customer, like brady, it's obvious he was going to get a better product. It is what it is. If I was out to bad mouth someone, I would have done it months ago when I found out about all of this.

Yeah, but I wasn't talking about you.
Your dad is known as "Mr. 4-Speed".

GRCFORCE327 is his name.
Awesome!
12,000 members and one dude owns a socket set.
Last time I was on The Alley and asked a technical question, the members kept asking me if 9/16" was sometime in the middle of September.

So I can be the *other* guy with tools who knows how to use them (and does)?
Ummmnothanks.

I used to help out on the alley. Did you know that they have negative rep points if you help someone? I had well over -60. I also wrote and did pics for a couple of DIYs there as well. Got tired of the hater/retards and quit.

I've got a set of tools too and I work on transmissions too. It must be hard to believe that viper owners wrench on their own stuff.

+1 for what Mark said EXCEPT for _some_ powerglides. you can get a glide to fit a gen II viper w/o modifying the frame.

You gotta admit, things can get pretty interesting over here, too.

Not worth the effort. Ratio of 10 haters to every intelligent positive person - the opposite of the VCA where we have only 1 loser/hater for every 10 good people.

I belong and am an active VCA member. I do every VCA event I can make it to even though they are ALL a minimium of a thousand mile trip. Although my wife is an SUV kind of girl, she also enjoys every VCA event.

If there was an Alley club they would have to have a boxing/ultimate fighter ring at every event. Not my idea of fun.

I've always thought "rep" systems were odd, on any message board. Didn't you and josh get into it a long time ago? That guy has the ability to drive someone nuts. He said all types of crazy crap about me. He just wanted to pick fights for no reason. If you throw him and kenny out, the psycho who stalks macedo, the board isn't bad. A year and half ago, it was getting out of control, can't argue that. V10 went and got his own board at viperforums and hasn't been back to the alley.

I think both boards have various things to offer. Hollywood and I just had a fun spat on there this week. I like visiting both boards. You should give it another shot.

I appreciate your concern for me, but I had an insane ex-wife and although I admit that a 'spirited arguement' can be exciting(?) I've had enough put-downs and insults for my lifetime.

I found that if a person wants to insult you and take 'shots' at you because of their own inadequacies ... the part of life dealing with that is worse than wasted. I stand by VCA has a minimium of 90% GOOD people. Although I'd like to see the 5% of losers that aren't worth the skin they use banned every time they start their insults ... guess that's not "democracy"?

That's OK because I think we should take away all Tasers and only use their Guns. Criminals deserve to be shot because "we, the taxpayers, need a break.'

It does seem to occur, though. Didn't somebody get banned in the last couple days? I re-visited a thread today where it looks like that happened, and a bunch of posts have been eliminated.
