Stallone Respects CART Drivers
Updated: Sat, Apr 07 07:17 PM EDT

By MIKE HARRIS, AP Motorsports Writer

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Sylvester Stallone, the star and driving force behind a new movie revolving around the CART series, said his introduction to open-wheel race cars was not what he expected.

"I wasn't aware that you basically lie down in the car, so it was very odd realizing that you go into the great unknown basically feet first and that was kind of unnerving," said the man who starred in the "Rambo" and "Rocky" movies.

"Second, there was a rattling all the time I was driving the car, so I thought, 'This car's coming apart,' until I realized it was my knees. So there's a fear factor that permeates one, and I realized it takes quite a while to get your heart, your body, your adrenal glands to settle down."

Stallone, who did a lot of his own driving in "Driven," which will premier in Los Angeles on April 16 and go into wide release April 27, said he spun out numerous times during his preparation at a Las Vegas driving school.

"It finally dawned on me about drift and precision and powering into an apex and speeding coming out so it's just getting the actual flow," he said. "It's almost like music and you start getting into a hypnotic rhythm. Then you start to push a little bit more and push a little bit more, and I was captivated by that."

The actor, who appears to be very physically fit, was also surprised by the G Forces a driver is subject to. "The next day, I was totally aware of it when I had to have someone brush my teeth for me," he said. "I couldn't move my hand, I couldn't form a fist, my neck, forget it, you could use my head for a lamp, I couldn't move."

He came away from the project with great admiration for professional race drivers.

"I try to explain to people that driving a race car is like speeding across an ice field." Stallone said. "The car is almost floating and that's the skill of driving, maintaining this car while its barely having adhesion ...to the track. It just puts you right to that ragged edge. That's an extraordinary skill to maintain that balance and coordination."

Driven : Interview With Sylvester Stallone

LOL

When's the last time you got a speeding ticket?

(Laughs) I get 'em all the time, seriously
Do cops let you off? Any good stories?
There was a great one, a long time ago. I was driving to the set of Rambo III (1988) in Arizona and I was all alone on this desert strip and I was doing about 145 mph in this Porsche. I'm really flying and then a cop pulls me over of course, and I dump one. And they think this man has to be a lunatic, totally nuts. And I said, (assumes a frantic tone) "Did you see 'em? Did you see 'em? Did you cut them off? Are they still there?!" And he went, "What?" And I said, "There's about eight guys with guns! ****! I was running for my life. Do me a favor. Take me in, impound the car, they're out to kill me. I don't know what it is. People didn't like Rambo, there's this radical group, they've been threatening me and writing letters, now they finally caught up with me!" Well, the cop escorted me all the way to the border (laughs and imitates cop) "I'll sit with you Rambo, I'll protect you Rocky." And I'm like, "Thank you officer."

Well, maybe he will come here and join the club. If he has the time,i am sure he would enjoy the comraderie of fellow Viper owners and the willingness to help another Viper owner out with any questions he may want to ask. If he does decide to join the best car club on earth,i just hope we will treat him just like anyone else here because most likely that is what he would want. He probably gets tired of fans always asking him about his latest movie etc... So come on in Sly!!! I want to know how your career is going and when your next movie will be out!! Oh yes! How tall are you man? !!!;)

Well, i guess all the years of acting paid off for him! :D

I think Chrysler made a big mistake not producing more of these ACR Verts last year.
I was very interested in these.

Arnold is more successful, richer, was a better body builder, and is about a foot taller...I would say it's stalone who has some catching up to do.

And the reason people like sly and many other wealthy collectors don't join car forums is because of star struck nut swingers who praise their every move and kiss their ass in hopes of becoming their friends. It's sad. Have some dignity.

BigDawg, I can't agree. I've followed both of their carreers and it's not what they both have done, which is amazing, but where they both are now and for sure Stallone has kept himself in shape while Arnold was too busy passing laws. But no doubt if Arnold wants it, he'll get back into shape in 6 months because that's the discipline he has and will do another great movie.

HAHAHAHA

Now those are the comments of a regular guy. My estimation of him just went up. :)

Dear VicTxV10,

Yes, I definitely knew it was going to Stallone, as we not only sold the beast , but Mark J. and crew did some major mods. Definitely a car guy , on the scale of Jay Leno.............Sly just wanted to talk cars and he worked directly with Woodhouse for us to get the Snake of his dreams.

Bill P

What mods?

Please define " nut swingers" for me??????:rolaugh::lmao:
I can only think of a few definitions:
Older gentleman that has been affected by gravity EXCESSIVELY
Person that swings for nuts
A squirrel holding a nut on a park swing
Inquiring minds want to know!!!
I think I may have ruptured something.:)

Just got back from looking at Sly's wheels that he didn't want and the sister car of his. My grandson loved both. Yes I am in CO. And the first day racing with my grandson, what a great day.

Actually No but glad to hear he's taking lesson's.

You just know people will be wanting him to light up the tires and, these things can be very unforgiving, especially if you don't know what your doing.

arnold is half as big as he used to be and still twice as big as us regular guys...LOL

Ive got a lot of faith in the guy..I remember a picture of him at the beach were he had a big gut and love handles quite a few years back..Then he made the Terminator3 movie and the guy looked beastely and was in amazeing shape..I really think he can turn it on and off any time he wants..

To the 96 year old...WOW..extremely impressive...For any of you military guys out there who ever did a rotation in Sainai Egypt for multi Force task and Observers...You guys may remember the 80 year old retired SGT Major named herb who had been a prisoner of war twice while enlisted...This man rode his bike every were and ran every day and still played sports and kicked everyones A$$ in wrestling matches. He literally moved like a 16 year old.. Wouldnt surprise me if he's still doing the same thing now 10 years later

just curious how old/new is that picture of Arnold?

I was wondering that myself because he looked ragged as recently as last week as he was leaving the governor's office. That job really took a toll on him I think.

Arnold will be 64 this July. Where have the years gone? It seems like yesterday when he was Conan. If he does not own a Viper, he should. Conan would.
