2001 GTS, 5000 miles, 1 yr. old. second battery. I have a custom exhaust and a TNT 605 stroker motor.
Now, Cold the Viper starts, no problem. I can drive to a store 2 miles away and the motor is warm. come from the store 10 min. later and the starter turns the motor slow, It strains to start. The hotter the motor gets the harder it is to start. Last night I had to sit and wait 30 min. for the motor to cool down before it would start, acts like a dead battery. (The battery has tested good) Even after the 30 min wait the motor/starter turned very slow and finally turned over and started. I was told that with the exhaust so close to the starter the starter when hot would not do the job until it cooled down. Someone suggested a heat shield. Anyone else with this problem? Do I need a better battery? Any suggestions. Thank you Rohn

Rohn,

You are alive. I had a 1970 GTO that would do exactly the same thing....High compression engine when hot is tough to turn over, I use to wait too. My first thought would be to make sure the connection(s) on the starter are solid take a file and clean them up. Next thing I would look into is getting a new starter. It is under warranty take it to Carlos and let them fix it...I know this is a sore subject but make them do it!

To many of us have had these at the track and cooking and I have never heard of needing a heat sheild..

Take care Buddy,
Sam
