93Snake,
With all due respect, my advice would be that you buy a house first and save the Viper purchase for your mid-life crisis.

Go with the Supra. It’ll probably be less in insurance, easier to repair and maintain, and a much more realistic car.

As for insurance expect to pay a lot if you are unmarried especially if you need full coverage. It’s been the only thing holding me back from getting a viper of my own. The $300/m shouldn't be much of a problem if you put all the $17k down and have decent credit. You'll have to work at convincing the bank because of your age.

I'll assume that you think of yourself as ready for this car, and that’s fine, but take some advice: RENT ONE FOR A WEEKEND! That’s the first thing everyone on the boards says and the last thing people do for some odd reason. This is not a 750hp mustang this is something much more!

Hold on a minute....I say get the Viper! You seem like you've got a good head on your shoulders & you're a hard worker! Why not get the best out there! I sure wouldn't get a Supra over the Viper! Go out this weekend and have your girlfriend look at both & let her decide.

I say forget about paying $30K or $30 anything. Add about 10K - 15K to that and GO FOR IT! As long as when the #'s are crunched, you can afford it...why not! Your not some bum or anything. You've got a good stable job and it's clear you're responsible enough to save your money! I say it's the opportunity of a lifetime to own America's finest Sports Car! I say get it - then work even harder - and enjoy yourself.
The cash that you'll have after the purchase.....save that money! Forget about mods for now. Just enjoy the Viper. It's fast enough already!

If you can get financing up to $45k (minus your $17k = $28k), you might be able to get into a Gen II RT/10, which will be much more enjoyable than a stealth or supra. And there's nothing wrong with driving a viper daily in NC, I do it (I'm over in Durham). I've got my hardtop on for the time being, but am anxiously awaiting the spring for more ******* sessions - makes the ride to and from work much better!

I never understood this daily driver crap. But then, I drove my # 34 GTS to 13 races last year and loved every mile, Tampa to Road America being the farthest. I guess since I consider stock cars, Indy and F1 cars perfect daily drivers, street or track, my opinion wouldn't be the norm.

A Gen I as your only car is asking for problems. If your going to get a Viper as your only transportation get a Gen II (1998+ RT/10 and all GTS), which just blows your budget. So now your left with a Supra or Stealth which I can't offer any advice on as I've not owned either.

financially you can swing it. BUT:

you will be car poor. and trust me- at your age you dont want that. get a 94 tt supra and use the leftover cash to make it bpu. you are looking at 400+ rwhp. also the supra will not depreciate much unleast toyota makes the new one and imports it. also the supra is a much better day-to-day driver.

a stealth will be cheaper, but heavier and slower. and will eat trannys like there is no tomorrow.

how do i know? i've owned both a supra tt and a 3000gt vr4.

and even better- use the money for a downpayment on a condo or whatever housing rocks your boat. in 5 years you will thank me.

than an rt-10. the kid lives in north carolina...

as i said- i've owned one and i've also driven a viper for a day so i have a good basis for comparison.

not to mention that i have transported a full-size washer in the supra

bah...

You only live once.. Just do it... If insurance is aproblem you could always put it on your parents insurance.. If they let you. Or use a PO Box for a more rural address.. Works great! your ins. pice will drop dramatically..

Perhaps saving a LITTLE more (6 months) would put u in a better situation..

just do it!!

work the numbers out, only you know if you can cut other areas and still be content to have a Viper in your hands, if it can fly, do it. If it's comprimising you lifestyle tooooo much, wait a bit, but don't give up.

You gotta live somewhere though, how about by an investment property with a garage, a tri-plex or so and rent out the rest, live in a unit. The garage is yours..........and then you have no housing costs!!!! my personal fav........

best of luck

I would recomend getting a condo in the 90k-100k range. Go FHA with 3% dwn + closing, should cost you 5k. That leaves you with 12k left, put that dwn, or save a little more, on a GEN I for 30k-35K. I am 23, had my Viper since I was 22, and my insurance is only $56 as a second car.

Nothing is more satisfying than driving a Viper, and then pariking it in your house! Most people can only aspire to do this in their 30's and 40's, why not do it in your 20's?

Best of luck.

P.S. I have a guy that will do your financing(being as young as we are, can be tough), no prob, just email me.
