I have just run 12.841 and 110.32 MPH in a 94 RT10 Gen with smooth tubes, K&N’s, and no cat’s. Pilot sports @ 55 psi on the front and 18 psi rear. Every thing else is stock. The motor is an Arrow rebuild on warranty due to shifted sleeves. Car and driver of 3600 pounds. Some traction compound sprayed on the track.

60 ft time of 2.042

Now the track is 2200’ asl, 73 deg f, humidity of 36% with a dew point of 39 f with an altimeter setting of 29.5.

Density altitude works out to 3700 ft asl. Average power loss is 3% per 1000 ft so that’s 11.1% from sea level.

Run the numbers for Hp versus ET gives me 403 @ the flywheel. I add on my 11.1% to give me 447.

Trap speed gives me 453 Hp @ the flywheel. Add my 11.1% puts me over 500 Hp. This I can’t believe.

Can anyone help me out on what’s happening here? I was going to sell the car for a newer one with more power, real windows and air conditioning but maybe I should hang onto this one. This is my 1st time at the track so I could very well be missing something here. I will post the time slip when I can get to a scanner on Tues.

Isn't than an oxymoron? (or just a regular *****?).

Where I live - in the land of reality - C5's run low-mid 13's and a few occasionally crack the 12's with a hard launch. And believe me, where I live isn't 2200' above sea level. In the land of reality, RT/10's also run low 12's when driven well.

12.8 with a DA of 3700' ASL is VERY VERY good. I'd put money no C5 with an intake would even come close.

"Yeah, it's bone stock...well with a intake.... and a shot of nitrous"

Hehe

Best run i've seen an LS1 vette pull local was a 12.9 with intake, borla and hosiers (bye bye half shafts hehe).

That's a good time for your first time out. I have only had 1 visit to the track with my '01 Viper. I have smooth tubes and filters(otherwise stock). I am an average driver(IMO). my best time was 12.44 @ 115 with a 1.96 60 foot. This was a couple hundred feet above sea level, mid 70's and 50% humidity. The key I feel is the launch. I practice every chance I get. It sounds like your setup is good. Some people leave around 2500-3000 rpms. On my best run, I left around 1300 and nailed the trottle immediately. Whatever works best for you. Have fun!

Well thanks for your comments both positive and negative. Even though I’m running an old Gen 1 that is as I relayed in the original message I feel my run was not that bad.

I would imagine that the Gen 2 Vipers that are pulling 11.9 at the tracks that are at or near sea level would now be in the low or mid 12’s when running on the higher elevation tracks.

The only way that a person would be able to maintain their times and rated power at high density tracks is to go with forced induction.

Oh, one other item. 9 runs at the different parking lot show and shines in the 100 foot electronically timed shoot outs against a 2001 and the 405 hp 2002 ZO6, I have taken all of the runs but one. My best times of 2.74 against their best of of 2.85. All unprepared parking lot surfaces on stock tires.

Tim,

Nice run for an old Gen oner! A little more practice a 12.6 or 12.7 is in line.
What gear were you finishing in? I was crossing the 1/4 in 3rd, probably right close to bumping the rev limiter, but never did.

My first time at the track with the RT was last weekend. It was 95 degrees out and humid as anything and I managed to get a 12.62 at 118 MPH as my best. My car is mostly stock as is yours, I have smooth tubes / K&N's and full 3" borla exhaust. I was running the old MXX3's and seemed to do ok getting off the line with 22 PSI in the rear.

I definitely feel a low 12 second time in the old gen I coming next time I go in October when it is a little cooler and I get the headers and short throw shifter in. I found the throw from 2nd to 3rd to be long and hard.
Also my neighbor has a Gorgeous Black 2001 Z06 and I got a chance to beat him 2 out of 3 times. Very close races all of them except for when I missed 3rd and ran a 13.5. I think his best was against me and was a 12.82 at something like 110. I am sure it could have been differant if it was a 2002 Z06.

Mainly I was happy to run a 12.8 or better in the Gen I on my first time.

Take care,
Ed

On all of my runs I would shift into 4th, but my best mph was 115. I consistently ran 12.4-12.5. I see other cars with 116-119 mph with similar times. Next time I will keep it in 3rd and see what happens.

I run with my 01 C5 Coupe (Corsa and K&N 320RWHP) 12.87 at 110MPH with 60ft at 2.02.

And yes it was my second time to the track with stock runflats and it was a 6-speed.

My best run was at Montgomery, AL with 12.5@112. With a better launch 12.2-12.3 is possible. Great run at that altitude.

These are good numbers for a Gen I Viper. Great job.

Tim, that is awesome! I did similar, but on an open night were no slips were given out, so spectators gave me the time. I had a full tank of gas, street pressure on the tires, my V-mania roof and windows in, a beautiful girl as a passenger, K&N filters and smooth tubes, Sean Roe high-flow cat and race muffs. I got a really fast hole shot .03, and 12.72 @ 111 mph (confirmed by Sir Hiss). I was so happy for being my first time running a drag.
Chuck beat me bit a hair since his car has a few more hp's...

Ed,

I was crossing the finish in 4th. I'm sure that I will hit the rev limiter if I stayed in 3rd but I will certainly try keeping it there next time.

What was the track elevation of where you were running at as it looks like your density altitude would have been up there?

Not sure of the track elevation. It was at ****** Springs Raceway in Pennsylvania.

I have the stock 307 gears and was not sure if I would hit the rev limiter but I noticed a better MPH when I did not shift. I will try shifting to 4th next time I go. I would shift to 4th just after crossing the 1/4 mile mark. I would say that I was at about 5800 RPM when crossing the 1/4 mile mark(if my memory serves me right).
I don't think you will hit the rev limiter. I did at least 6 passes like this and did not hit it once. I figured if I hit, well then I would know that I need to shift to 4th. Not sure though if I am passed the power band and would have actually gotten a better et if I shifted.
More practice and trying differant things I will figure out what works best.
