The waiting *****! I kind of started questioning myself if I went overboard?? My B-day is March 1, & Doug said 100% it will be back by then. How long you have left??
I hate to spend 4k more, but the brakes are probably a smart thing to do.

One of our members changed from stock 01 ABS to 03 ABS. There were some mods needed to do this but they were able to get the 03 brakes inside the 18" wheels. Now, what I want to know is can the 03 brake, disk and rotors work on a 99 with out them being ABS. Just larger disks and calipers.
And would this be more economical for replacement rotors and pads as opposed to say stoptec etc.?

Last question on this. I am asking you brake specialist out there If you had a 02 RT 10 that was DLM SC & you mainly ran it on the street just for fun, took it to Viper days 1-2 times a year & drag raced 1-2 times a year, would you spend the 4-5K on stoptechs.

I am just asking because after paying DLM, the spoiler I bought, 1/2 shafts, radiator, clutch, harnesses & the roll bar & think I have enough "rainy day" money to get my racedeck floor & a full wall of built in storage cabinets,
or I can get the brakes.

What do you think?
Andy

Adam I thought I would just tack this on the end of your thread, :)

AJT,

I have an 02 GTS I mainly drive on the street and track 3-4 times a year. I have worked my way up through a number of brake modifications and recently purchased the StopTech front-only kit since it's mostly the front that does the stopping. Even StopTech recommends against the 4 wheel kit unless you have an all out race car. Of course, there is the poser appeal...

For me, the motivation was pad life. I was lucky to get a single days running out of a brand new set of pads using my stock calipers. So I kept having to go to harder and harder pads just trying to get them to make it though the day. Hard pads are embarassingly noisy on the street and I'm too lazy to rebed my rotors before and after every track day.

The StopTech pads are bigger by half over the stock pads, yet half the cost of stock. Therefore I expect (and have heard) they will last a full day using a rotor friendly compound like BrakeMan #3.

To be fair, I have heard some unflattering things about the durability of StopTech rotors. I'll have to track my car before I can confirm or deny that.

AJT,

I have a 99 GTS that is pretty quickly turning into a track car with all of the mods I have done to it. I put the 4 wheel Stop Tech kit on my car in October. The main reason I did it was that on stock brakes/lines my pedal went to the floor going into a high speed turn and I took an off track excursion. Luckily there was nothing but grass to run off into, but if it has been at TMS there would have been a concrete wall to greet me. The repair cost would have been much greater than the $5,000 for the brake upgrade.

That being said, if you go to the VD events 1-2 times per year, at the very least you should put stainless lines on your car and Motul 600 in your lines. Then pay close attention to the brake feel as you go into turns. The VD or track events would be the only place you will boil your brake fluid based on your post.

As a benefit, the Brakeman #3 pads wear much longer with the larger pad surface and less time I actually spend on the brakes since the Stop Tech brakes stop me in a much shorter distance than the stock set up. That wasn't in my thinking when I bought the Stop Techs, it was a benefit realized after running the car at the track. My Brakeman #3's have lasted more than three times as long as the stock pads/brakes.

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like I can get away with the stock ABS brakes on the street(I'm using EBC Grn), but I will need to upgrade before Vipr Days events. Do stainless lines help any on the street? I never looked but are theses to just replace rubber lines from brake line to caliper?

Thanks
Andy

Yes, they go between the calipers and the metal brake lines on the frame. The stainless lines don't "balloon" like the rubber stock ones do when under heat/pressure induced by hot calipers and fluid.

The Motul 600 will also greatly increase the temperature operating range of the brake fluid over the stock fluid.

The Stop Techs give me more confidence to go deep into the curves before hitting the brakes. Before the upgrade, I would tend to test the brakes going into a corner before I actually got on them.

Looking forward to seeing you at the track someday.

Don't forget the benefit from better brake cooling. Some effort spent on cooling the rotors/calipers can also prolong pad life as well as help prevent brake fade. Even a setup like Cone's kit is only $350.

AJT,

I goofed. It just hit me, your car is supercharged. You will be entering corners MUCH faster than me. Seeing as how my stock 02 brakes were marginal on my stock 02 car, I suspect your stock 02 brakes would be inadequate (for track duty) on your supercharged car.

You need to get advice from a road racer running similar HP.

Yes it is now Super Charged, I have'nt seen it but it is SC. I am trying to choke down 5K. I realize that it is not much money in the scheme of things, but I was'nt going to do it for a while. Anyone have pics of the diff. color combinations? I looked on stoptechs wb sit & did not see any.....

NDW where is Mineola, TX USA?
I hope to meet you at the track also one day, I see that there is a lot of VD in Dallas. Sounds like that is the place to be if you are in Texas!

SUPERCHARGED VIPERS ( GENII ) What are you using?

Thanks

Red/ White? Is'nt brake dust going to make that white into grey? You can get the caliper red, black, silver & the other part it fits into(forgot the right term) in red black & silver? I talked to Jon this afternoon & I do not remember hearing him say anything about white...

Any PICTURES of these??????

Thanks

AJT,

Mineola is 80 miles due east of Dallas. I go to Motorsport Ranch track which is located southwest of Fort Worth.

The white lettering on my red calipers has turned a little off white, but it isn't bad. Rock chips, scrapes, etc.. just come with the territory at the track. Not much you can do to prevent them. I am going to have my facia repainted and not worry about it.

I have the slotted rotors from Stop Tech. From what I have been told the drilled rotors will develop cracks between the holes from the heat. The only rotors with holes that hold up in racing conditions are the rotors that were forged with the holes, not drilled. This is what I have been told, I have no personal experience with them.

I did install the Cones cooling kit on my car to help with getting some air on the calipers. Every little bit helps.

I'd like to see your SC car, it would be fun to have an extra 150 hp!

Good luck!

If you are concerned about $$, get the stoptech fronts with rear SS lines. This will stop in the same distance as the 4 wheel setup for about 2k$. You will still have to retain the ugly rear calipers so the poser appeal is far less....

Does someone have numbers to compare with the stoptech and the new Viper SRT brakes. The new SRT seems to be the best right now in braking next to a GT2 or GT3. What are the numbers with Gen II and Stoptech and SRT

Thanks
