If they are like the ones on the 06, they will only clear over the stripe, and there is some debate about that....

same process they have ALWAYS used.

completed car gets stripes on after the fact, and they clear over the stripes, which were applied over the clear coat of the normal paint, and then cleared again.

****ty process, but its how it is..

exactly, for $3000 you would think they could do a decent job....not a big Prefix fan. I wouldn't even mind if they had some clue about customer service

On my 2006 blue/silver you can tell by feeling the edge of the stripes that they are, as mentioned, after the fact.

Ive had a few people at car shows and around town ask about the stripes. Some thought the stripes were tape.

So you are saying striped cars have an extra coat of clear coat over the entire car? Or do they just clear the stripe when they apply it?

The car is clear coated at factory, shipped to striping location. Stripes are laid out, painted and cleared. ONLY over the striped area. Thats why you feel the hard edge on stripes.

Sure it would be better to paint striipes on after basecoat color and then clear whole entire car once. But its not cost effective, the factory isnt set up to stripe, so car gets completed and then cars that need stripes are sent out as sublet.

not Prefix's fault for the process it is the process that Dodge wants and is willing to pay for, IMHO the proper way would be to reclear the whole hood to "bury/blend" the stripes in. But this is how Dodge wants it done!! not necessarily Prefix, and was told so by one of the principles of Prefix.

SEARCH THIS TOPIC it has been beaten to DEATH.

I have toured Prefix twice. Sylvan Mike said it best: ONLY THE STRIPE on SRT10 is clear-coated at PreFix. This makes the painted stripe even THICKER than it is already. It creates a distinct EDGE to the stripe. The body parts come in to CAAP clear-coated.

This is NOT how it has "ALWAYS" been done, but is how it has always been done on SRT10s only. [except SnakeSkin Edition, which cleared /feathered whole upper body.]

Interesting. How was in done on the GTS? I have owned two and there is a derfinite edge to the stripes and I know both cars are original stripes from the factory.

That stripe 'edge' will be what makes the car worth more, as an unrestored original, at Barrett Jackson in 30 years. :D

Im' not 100% but i think some of the older cars had tape stripes with clear coat over them. On the older Vipers the car parts came to CAAP with stripes already painted.

I'm waiting to hear Jonny Boy's response to this one too. As my 02 ACR was the exact same way. I'll stick to my "ALWAYS" until you can prove otherwise Jonny B., because I was told exactly the same thing back in 2001 from the dealership when i was looking at an 00 ACR at the time....!!

sorry but we all know what a wealth of accurate knowledge that dealers can be!!

there will be a definite edge as there is MORE paint where the stripe is, but the clear put on after the stripe covers the stripe the stripe edge and body color.

I have been to CAAP at least 18 times and when they were building GTS' panels came in with stripes already on them, from ASC.

do a search of this topic and you will find more

Again, your not telling us that they werent added AFTER the original paint was already applied with a clear coat, and then had the stripes added and clear coated again.

Maybe they didnt add clear coat to the stripes afterwards on the gts's but they certainly did have the original color clear coated, and then the GTS stripes were added on top of it, whether they clear coated them again after that, i dont know. But simply adding a stripe over a base paint and then clear coating, would NOT creat such a raised area like the gts and the gen 3s have.

96 RT was the only tape-striped, then clear-coated.

Gen 2 stripes are painted prior to CAAP and cleared. Later modles had 1 less clear layer.

There is only a slightly vague 'edge' to painted, cleared OE stripes, while you can TRIP OVER the edge of SRT10 stripes

Thats the detail I was looking for...

Interestingly enough, I sure see the 06 coupe's stripes to be the same height as my old 02 ACR. But that being said, Jon B knows his sheet, so I'll stick with what he says !!

Thanks,

Jon

Does anyone know if a 3M clear bra works over the SRT10 stripes? or does it leave a little air bubble gap along the edge of the stripe?

The edge is so huge that they have to cutt the 3m so that it will sit right. Like Jon said you can TRIP over the edges. The GTS stipes are WAY better than the SRTs, should't be that way.

If this is true, your GTS has aftermarket, or re-painted stripes.

Is this possible? GTS stripes have a gentle, braille-detectable edge. SRT10 has a LEDGE.

The edge is SO distinct and, well, EDGY that it would certainly could capture an air channel. I did see some clear-bra SRTCs this weekend and did NOT notice this!

lol, not unless they did it at the dealership and made up a new maronie sticker :)

no, my ACR came with them from the factory (i bought the car new). Interesting, I always thought they sucked on all gen 2s that I saw including mine (the non flush nature of them). So with my gen 3, I just assumed the tradition had continued. Still love the look over non striped cars, just sure wish they could keep it under the same clear thats on the non stripped sections.

Oh well, its American, what can we expect :rolaugh:
