Struggling......

OK .....I made the mistake of looking at a Gen 3 last night, and now am struggling whether to unload my Gen 1 and get this one instead. Anyone else ever been faced with this dilemma?

It’s in absolutely stunning condition… 2003 SRT-10, 13500 miles, Belanger headers, installed by Rick Martin in Phoenix.....the owner will let it go for $35K.

But the thought of letting my Gen 1 go is not making me happy either.

What to do...waaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

You know what...I've thought about that, and that's what the wife said, too...but I'm trying to choose one over the other...probably can't be done.

Do you think $35K is a pretty good deal?

The good thing is that it's local over here, so no shipping fees, taxes or other expenses to worry about...

I think its a pretty good deal for a Gen III with 13.5k miles. Buy both!

I LOVED my '93 Gen 1 and there are times when I miss it......... BUT the Gen 3 is so much more drive-able. Real Top, Real Windows, World Class Brakes, More HP. The interior does seem a bit tighter in a Gen 3. $35k seems to be a decent price based on the condition and proximity to you. If I could have kept my Gen 1, I would have, but in all honesty, I doubt I would have driven it at all.

I kept mine and I drive them both. I use the Gen 1 for local cruising, and the Gen 3 for longer trips, or when the weather may be a factor.

Every time I get back in the Gen 1 I love it. Something about it just grabs me every time. Suns out, got to go for a drive!

I vote for Both if you can.

That's the part I like about the Gen 1....total brute force and "who the hell cares" if the AC works or not..

But then there's the SRT, with the headers, refinements, class, and the ability to drive it out on a cloudy day and not worry about carrying any tops with me, as with the Gen 1.

Thanks to everyone for your comments...I've definitely decided NOT to let go of the '95....but am now wondering if the $35K price tag for the 2003, w/headers and 13K miles, is a steal or not...

Thanks....The owner was nice enough to let me drive the Gen 3 last night, which was my first time driving one. Awesome experience, even though I wasn't able (or willing?) to open it up on the roads like I would if it were mine.

Even though the Gen 3 had much more power under the hood (by far), it was so refined that I didn't really "feel" it, as I do with the Gen 1. Does that make sense?

By the way...I'm still leaning towards having both in my garage!

Andrew, I never had that problem cause I was only lookin for anything up to 02'. There are some beautiful cars from 03' & newer & I'm sure I would love the extra hp & newer creature comforts, BUT I just could not get over the fact that they look too much like a Corvette (to me & I've had friends tell me the same thing )so therefore I just couldn't bring myself to look for anything after o2'. Maybe some day. What was the reasoning for the change in the first place.

That makes PERFECT sense, in fact that was my exact point. GEN 3 and 4 owners may get defensive, but a Gen 1 with its ridiculous disproportionate torque and the sheer "grumpiness" of the experience makes it quite different. Like t or not, everything since the GEN 1 is essentially a marketing compromise. Much of the compromise makes fora far more sophisticated and useful car, even faster. But the experience is different, like it or hate it.

I would most agree with Tony in that if I was going to own just one, I'd hang on for a GEN 4 or 5 if I could. Sort of going to the opposite far end of the spectral compromise.

I'd own any of them but there's just something incredibly alluring about the raw nature of the Gen I...it started it all. But I'd wait wait for a GenIV or GenV...can't go wrong with any generation really. So many choices...so little money.

This makes total sense...I have heard those comments as well. And I wasn't really looking to make a change in the first place...just came across a local ad for the Gen 3, and figured "what the heck....let's go check it out", since I've never even seen one before. As soon as I saw it rolling out of the garage, I fell in love with it (hopefully my Gen 1 isn't listening).

Now all of the opinions that I've read regarding Gen 1 vs. Gen 3 makes sense to me now...pro's and con's for each. So maybe having both is the answer...

I don't think you can go wrong either way. You've got a bunch of really good comparisons between the two, the 2 comparisons are pretty much like night & day. It basically comes down to which one YOUR the most comfortable with. Just my .02, did you say if it was gonna be a DD or not, if so that makes a BIG difference.

I would keep your Gen I, I have a Gen I, III, and Gen IV. The Gen I is a car all of its own and I take it out on nice days were no top is needed. ( Still in the trunk but not needed). The Gen III is totally different car, No comparison of the two, Gen IV is a totally different car over the othe two. I would say keep both and enjoy them both, You won't be disappointed you did!!!!!

My parents snowbird in Mesa, AZ (ariving in two weeks) and Dad is looking at finally getting into a Viper (wants a GEN 1, like yours) after all his years in Muscle Cars, etc. If you are selling the GEN 1, let me know. Car would remain local in Mesa, AZ, get driven a whopping 5 months a year and be lucky if it accrues 1,000 miles a year the way Dad granny drives everything, even his old muscle cars. If you wanted it back in the future, I am sure he would be more than willing to sell back in the future. MY (Ha! Ha!) Plan is get him into the GEN 1 and enjoy it for a few years and when he turns 60, right when then new GEN 5 comes out, he will finally treat himself to that one new car he has always wamnted and just pony up for a Gen 5. Of course the "will" would need to be update to have it survive to me in the event, god-forbid anything happens. If not, guess who gets to drive the GEN V when we visit them in mesa, AZ? MEEEEEEEE!

I imagined my first Viper would be a Gen 1/2. I wanted one from the day I first saw it. When I finally had the opportunity to buy a Viper I went to the SRT-10. I enjoy this car immensely. If you're worried it's overlooked as a vette - you're wrong. This car will always have a place in my garage. I've zero regrets I chose it over an earlier Gen.

That being said, my next car will be a Gen 1/2. If it's remotely possible - have them both.

I would not let go of the Gen 1 unless you have to. For what you will get for it it won't be worth the fun of keeping it (and it may be worth more later)

I have had 2 Gen3s and 2 Gen4s--I guess I am in the minority, but there ain't a lot of difference IMO, and some things I liked about my 05 and 06 more than my 09 and 10. If you can get a good deal on the Gen3 (and you like the way it drives) I would get it.

With both you won't rack up too may miles on 1 car, and you will have variety. And Gen1s are bullet proof--so no worries. (I put 50K miles on my first Gen 1 back in 94 and never did a thing to it)
